The Malta M-ettes Cross Country Team is off to a solid start with 13 runners participating this season.
Among those participating are seniors Eva Harms, Jada Nicholson and juniors TaChante Cole and Joanie Sjostrom who are state performers. Harms has run at state in all three of her previous cross country seasons.
"Eva's one of those competitive girls that really gets out there and she's looking good early this season," Coach Thea Solberg said.
Nicholson is another returning runner that has been strong in past years.
"She's one of those girls that will run and towards the end of the season put on a really strong performance," Coach Solberg said. "She's got long legs and she can really get her stride going."
Also returning are seniors Mariah Green and Sarah Ware.
"Mariah's been a sprinter in track so she's got a quick pace," Coach Solberg said. "She's getting out there and working really hard because she would like to be a runner at state."
Green just missed running at state due to an injury in her sophomore season and qualified for state in her junior season, but missed out on the event again.
"She looks strong because she's had this track experience and it grooms them," Coach Solberg said.
Juniors Cole, Sjostrom and Monicha Williamson are all returning runners.
"TaChante has been running off and on all summer," Coach Solberg said. "She has had track experience where she did the mile race and really has learned about distance running. She has had a running base and she really looks strong this season."
Sjostrom has been under the weather early in the season but she has impressed Coach Solberg when she has been able to run.
"Joanie came in strong with some running over the summer," Coach Solberg said.
The sophomore class consists of Taylor Eggebrecht, Taylor Gilkerson and Reese Sjostrom.
The freshman class consists of Kaycee Bond, Jillian O'Brien and Aidan Wiese.
Coach Solberg mentioned that the top runners in practice have been Green, Harms, Cole and O'Brien.
The team is looking forward to a few meets this year.
"The one that they really like is Glasgow because it's completely flat with black top," Coach Solberg said. "You can post some really good times and it makes you feel really confident."
She also mentioned a couple of other meets.
"The other two meets that are really fun that they like are the Dodson meet and Harlem meet because they are flat meets that have a lot of grass," Coach Solberg said. "It's a nice surface and you can get some really good times."
