Mike Powell wins AMX race

Father of Demo Derby winner, wins hours before son

Last Sunday at the Phillips County Fair was a pretty special day for the Powell family of Chinook as Mike Powell won the AMX races in the afternoon and later Garrett Powell, Mike's son won the Demolition Derby that night.

Not only did Mike win the B Main Event in Dodson's AMX Racing. He did so in front of close to a thousand people. The race marks AMX racing's first bump and run event in Dodson this year.

"It was nice and cool for a change," Powell said. "There was nice racing and when it's clouded over like this, it's great."

His car, a loud orange and blue painted 383 cubic-inch powered 78 Pontiac Grand Prix, seemed untouchable in the B Main Events even lapping cars in his heats.

"It's held together for eight years pretty good," Powell said. "It runs well."

His car has remained pretty much the same over the years but the difference this year was a set of back tires with tread deep enough for an SUV.

"I just put these on new and they made a lot of difference today," Powell said. "I've needed them for quite a while, I got them on and they've performed well for me."

Though his hometown fair is in Chinook, a town in Blaine County, Powell has grown fond of the Phillips County Fair over the years.

"I always try to make the fair," he said. "It's been good to us. I always try to make this race. Always."

Powell has been racing for the past eight years and his victory last Saturday came in his first race of the year.

"There's a lot of cars here and it's a good turnout," Powell said.

Powell had participated in the Blaine County Demolition Derby a week or so ago. And he also participated in the chain event in the P.C. Fair last Saturday.

"I did the first derby in my life last week in Chinook," Powell said. "My kids put together a car and I named it my bucket list number six."
