New building to be built

The latter part of last week R. M. Trafton disposed of lots west of the First State Bank and those south of the post office to Ole Veseth. We understand Mr. Veseth will in the very near future commence the erection of a $40,000 brick block building on the lots south of the post office and that the building has been rented. It will be one of the substantial buildings of the city. It is not known at this time what will be done with the lots west of the bank, but it is likely that in a very short time there will be modern buildings erected on them.

Pinched for fighting

This morning Chief of Police Clarence Cosner arrested Clay and Elmer Howerton, Ernest Turner and Clarence Harper for being drunk and creating a disturbance. The Howerton boys and the other two had a fight and a general rough house in the restricted district last night and the arrest followed. Judge Wilson fined the bunch $10 each. The younger Howerton boy was released as he was under age, but the other three are spending their time in jail and will be there for a few days to come.

Socialist Ticket

Late last night almost a full socialist ticket was filed with the Clerk and Recorder Schneider for the coming primaries and it is evident that as an organization they will be very much alive at the coming election. There is but one candidate filed for each office, so at the primaries there will be no contest. They have some very good men up for office and some that this paper has very little use for, and those whose candidacy we will comment on later, and especially is this true of the man who is out for treasurer.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Running for treasurer was Otto Munson, though no further information about the paper's disdain appears in this edition.)

Grandstand Shows at the Fair

An unusually beautiful extravaganza of beauty and talent will be presented in the "America Swings" night show which carries its own orchestra. The performance moves smoothly through five attractively costumed ensembles.

Musical entertainment at all the shows will be provided by the Dodson High School band which has prepared a different program of stirring marches and novelty numbers. The band has appeared at the fair before and has been favorably received as an outstanding musical aggregation directed by Charles Swatek.

Colored team coming to Malta Aug. 14

Thursday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock Malta will meet one of the ace colored traveling squads, the Southern Stars. The Stars play baseball for keeps and at the same time manage to provide plenty of comedy and sensational fielding and batting. Their long string of victories over the best teams in the state attests their ability as fine players. The fans are certain to get their money's worth of baseball out of this game.

Good attendance at Fair despite threatening weather

Cloudy skies and cool weather did not seem to discourage fairgoers as the crowd averaged about the same as last year at the Phillips County Fair Saturday and Sunday. Total paid attendance at the outside gate Saturday was 2,679 and 4,141 on Sunday.

Loring combiner robbed at Fair

A man by the name of Walker, employed as a custom combiner at Loring, was mugged and robbed of $17 as he walked between two tents at the Phillips County Fair at Dodson last Saturday. Three men mugged him as he stepped between the two tents to put the money in his billfold.

Swim Team fourth at state meet

Senior Division swimmer Erik Schumacher claimed high point senior boy honors at the State Swim Meet in Fort Benton this past weekend.

Schumacher also set a new federal record of 1:00.93 while winning the 100 freestyle event. He also took first in the 200mm and finished second in the 50-fly event.

Malta placed fourth as a team in the A class with 110 points.

Alex Koss will receive the team's honor award which goes to a swimmer in his final year of competition.

Bird causes blackout

A misguided bird flew into a voltage regulator at a Malta electric substation Monday afternoon, plunging many parts of town into early darkness.

The accident, which occurred at 1:20 p.m., left 1,550 Northwestern Energy customers without power in their homes or businesses until shortly after 5 p.m.

Costin named Mustangs basketball head coach

David Costin of Saco has been hired as the new head basketball coach at Malta High School.

"I'm excited," Costin told the PCN. "It's a good opportunity. I just hope everything works out and we all see some success and have a lot of fun in the process."

Costin coached the Saco Panthers boys squad for a total of 10 years since 1991 with four years off in between stretches. He took the Panthers to a second place and fourth place finish at the Class B Boys State Tournament.
