GN Bridge catches fire
The Great Northern bridge on eand a half miles east of Vandalia caught fire last Saturday shortly after No. 1 passed over it and the center of the bridge was entirely destroyed. A freight train was rushed to the fire but too late to save the rest of the bridge. Numbers 4, 224, and the local freight were held up at Hinsdale until early Sunday morning and No. 28 was sidetracked at Vandalia. The fire was supposed to have started from the live coals in ashes dumped from No. 1.

Aluminum collections started
With a rattle of post and a cleaning pan, Phillips County opened its drive for scrap aluminum Monday. The drive will continue all this week and will end early next week. Girl Scouts in Malta are contacting homes throughout the city and collecting the metal.
Dr. G. W. Setzer, chairman of the the drive for this county, said that results are gratifying but that householders should make every effort to search their homes for toys, kitchen ware, household appliances and gadgets which have outlived their usefulness. Dr. Setzer said that Montana is one of the five states that first began the campaign.
Nearly 100 pounds of scrap aluminum have been collected by Girl Scouts of Dodson under the supervision of Mrs. Dwight Jones. The Woman's Club of Loring and Whitewater are conducting the drives in their respective communities. At Zortman and Landusky, Harry Witcomb is supervising the collections and at Saco the Jaycees under Mayor Martin Hanson are collecting the scrap aluminum.
Editor's Note: Scrap metal drives were held across the United States to help in the war effort in Europe. The United States would not officially join WWII until the Japanese bombed the American fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941.

Wolffe injured when car strikes bridge west of town
Paul Wolffe, 22, who was seriously injured early Sunday morning when his automobile struck a bridge five miles west of town is in the hospital recovering from a broken leg, cuts, bruises and possible internal injuries.
Exact details of the accident cannot be learned but it was believed Wolffe, whose home is in Rapid City, S.D., lost control of his car and the vehicle swung over to the opposite side of the road striking the abutment of the bridge. The force with which the car crashed into the bridge twisted iron. Wolffe has been employed on the Steve Holman Ranch near Dodson.

Questions and frustration aired at public meeting
A large crowd of angry and frustrated farmers, ranchers and concerned citizens gathered Tuesday night at the BLM's public meeting to solicit comments and questions regarding the draft of the Judith-Valley-Phillips Resource Management Plan.
The anger and frustration came mainly from what local landowners are seeing as disregard for their concerns and their livelihood in the BLMs preferred alternative management plan and in many serious inaccuracies to maps and other data included in the report.
