Galt wins 15th Golf Title at Marian Hills

On a day many would've stayed inside due to the dreary and rainy conditions over Malta, the Marian Hills Women's Golf League hosted its annual championship game and was able to complete the game en lieu of a one hour rain delay.

The Championship event was filled with prizes for every hole, fellowship and fun on Malta's beautiful course.

This year's champion was Barb Galt, who has found a lot of success in the league since it kicked off in the early nineties.

Galt won the game after defeating KayDel Stiles in a two round playoff after the two tied in regulation.

The winning stroke was a par on hole #1, while Stiles went for bogey.

"It feels good," Galt told the PCN. "I wish I had played a little bit better in the beginning and we wouldn't have had a two hole playoff but the same could've been said for KayDel. If she would've played better she would've won it."

Galt admitted early in the game that she needed to work on her short game.

"I could putt a lot better and chip better, that's for sure," Galt said.

Galt and many of the other golfers were affected by the rain.

"The first five holes were alright and the last four on the first nine were rainy," Galt said. "It was really, really bad."

She didn't blame her short game on the rain, but rather her approach.

"I have to keep my head down and concentrate," Galt said. "I look up when I hit it sometimes like I'm going to see my good shot and then I don't hit it far enough."

Sascha Cole is a former M-ette on the school's lone championship team in 2012, but Cole still plays with the Marian Hills League.

"The first round wasn't too great," Cole said. "But the second nine is a heck of a lot better."

Turns out Cole just needed some time to wake up to get going.

"I drank some caffeine and it quit raining," she said.

Cole has become fond of the league even with a championship in high school.

"I just think it's a lot more fun in my opinion," Cole said.

Shannan Fried is in her first season with the Marian Hills Women's League, but so far she has enjoyed the experience.

"I enjoy it," Fried said. "All the ladies are really nice and helpful. It's been a good experience."

Hole nine gave her a little trouble, but she nearly sank an impressive 12 foot downhill putt.

"This isn't your typical game of mini-golf," Fried said. "There are tricky, tricky hole placements."

At the Team League's midway point, PC Title has already locked up a spot in the League's Team Championship round, which will be played this fall. The winner of the second half of the season will meet up with PC Title on that day.
