One Nation, Under God
With the 4th of July a recent memory, we know that it’s just going to get hotter here in Phillips County. If you need to find a way to cool off during the dog days of summer, here are some to get you started.
1. Swim at the Malta City Pool
a. Take a refreshing dip in the city pool. Great for families and kids of all ages! Contact the city to learn about swim lessons and open swim times.
2. Grab an Ice Cream
a. A cool creamy cone or coffee is just the thing to beat the heat during the summer. Stop by our locally-owned Dairy Queen, Promises or 3 Sisters for that refreshing treat.
3. Drop a Few Quarters at the Stretch’s Arcade
a. Many of us have memories of stepping into an arcade and losing ourselves in the lights, bells and clings. Share this memory and make some new ones with your friends and family at the arcade in Stretch’s pizza.
4. Enjoy a Montana Brew at One of Our Taverns
a. Step into one of our taverns and saunter up to the bar to drink a cold Montana brewed beer. Whether it’s on draft or bottled, you can enjoy a refreshing drink and support local Montana companies.
5. Stop Into the Two Museums
a. If you are a history buff you will love spending time at the Phillips County or the Great Plains Dinosaur museums. Both will give you a glimpse into our area’s history and how we got to where we are today.
6. Swing or Skate into Trafton, Hillcrest or Riverview Park
a. Whether you prefer the traditional swings and slides, or the more adventurous skate park. Head to our city parks to enjoy some fun in the sun or shade.
7. Go Fishing
a. There’s nothing like dropping a line and taking in the day while waiting for a bite. You can enjoy fishing in one the Milk River, Nelson Reservoir or one of the many other reservoirs and ponds in the county. Stop by the BLM office, Westside Sports or the Chamber office to pick up this year’s pond fishing guide.
8. Take a Float or Kayak Trip
a. Need a little excitement in your way to beat the heat? How about renting a kayak and taking a float down the Milk River or at Nelson Reservoir? You don’t need a kayak, a float tube will do, just get out there and cool off in the water!
9. Head to the Mountains
a. If hiking is more your thing, travel down to Zortman and hike of the trails. You’ll get a break from the heat by being in the mountains and the shade while you see the sights.
10. Get Your Shopping On
a. Shopping is always a great way to beat the heat. Malta’s downtown district is filled with shops and unique experiences. Try on a new outfit, find that perfect garden accessory, water toys for the kids, or high-tech gadget.
11. Have a Dinner Out
a. Why heat up the house when you can go out to eat? Dine in one of the restaurants in town, or grab some take out and find a shady spot with a breeze.
Regardless of what you do to beat the heat, stay hydrated and keep water with you (maybe some sunscreen and bug spray too!). For more ideas on what to do in Phillips County, see
