Third Jean Green Memorial

The Marian Hills Golf Course hosted the Third annual Jean Green Memorial last Saturday with over 30 golfers present. The event not only served as a family reunion, it also served as a fundraiser that raised $420 for Tricia LaBrie, a friend of the family. The event also had $25 cash prizes on each hole.

The event's $500 first place prize was won by a local team consisting of Lane Hasler, Teaguean Knudsen, Billy Lulloff and his son Ty Lulloff. The team had a score of 48.2.

Hasler and Knudsen also were a part of last year's winners.

"We just like to come out and be involved in the community," Knudsen said. "It's a ton of fun. We really enjoy any chance to come out here and play with a bunch of fun people."

Though Knudsen has won in both memorials, he admitted winning wasn't a part of the plan.

"We weren't concerned with winning," he said. "We just wanted to have a good time."

Sarina Venable, a daughter of the late Jean Green was pleased with the turnout.

"This event means a lot to me," Venable said. "He loved to golf so we wanted to keep his memory going."

The game itself was team scramble, in which each team member would hit the ball and the closest hit in each stroke was used for the next stroke. Every team had a mulligan.

Marian Hills has been under the solid upkeep of Cory Shelhamer and the course shined again last Saturday.

"It's probably in the best shape that I have ever seen it in," Rena Math said.

Math has been a golfer at Marian Hills for close to ten years, so her opinion has weight.

Steve Niles is a former resident of the Saco and Whitewater communities. Though he and his family now live in Billings, Niles was able to make the trip to honor his friend and co-worker Jean Green.

"I worked on the Austin Ranch with Jean for thirty years and it's been thirty years," Niles said. "I enjoy it. I get to see his family and kids. I've known them since they were all little."

Niles and Green had a lot of history and a lot of it was spent on the golf course.

"It's great to come up here and see everybody and remember Jean," Niles said. "We used to golf a lot together. He was a great guy."

Green and Niles were close and it seems Green had even connected Niles and his wife Lorrie, who was an English teacher at Whitewater Public Schools.

"He actually made the call," Niles said. "I wouldn't call so he rang her number, handed me the phone and said here, ask her out."

Steve and Lorrie have been married for thirty years.

"That's the type of guy he was," Niles said.

At the memorial Niles golfed with his wife, son Alex and his girlfriend Andrea.
