The Malta Swim Team placed sixth place with only twenty-three athletes last weekend at the Glasgow Swim Meet. The meet was the polar opposite of the cold and rainy Plentywood Swim Meet held a week prior.
“It was almost too hot,” Malta Swim Team Head Coach Cassie Pratt told the PCN. “It was good. The swimmers were nice and loose. They were ready to go. There was no rain to worry about.”
The coach was impressed with her team last weekend as many improved on their times over the weekend including Sam Renville, who did well in the 400 meter freestyle on Sunday.
He came in with a seed time of 5:45.78 and left with a time of 5:34.30.
“Sam had a wonderful race, worked very hard, pushed himself and cut all that time,” Coach Pratt said. “It’s a 16 lap race. It pushes the swimmer to the brink. They really have to work hard and be conditioned. Sam did a wonderful job.”
He also broke time on his 100 fly. He had a best of 1:20.97 and ended with a time 1:16.57.
Coach Pratt also noted that Jillian O’Brien had a strong effort in her 100 fly.
“She cut about a second off of her time,” Coach Pratt said. “She did an awesome job.”
She mentioned that every swimmer improved on their times on the second day of the meet.
“Every single one of my swimmers either cut time or improved in their technique,” Coach Pratt said.
The 13-14 relay team consisting of Carly Garfield, O’Brien, Kylie Hunter and Chloe Hunter also had a great meet cutting time even with a switch in their rotation.
“I was very proud of them this weekend,” Coach Pratt said. “They ended up cutting a second and it was a completely new order they were swimming in. I think we have a relay for the rest of the year.”
The swimmers will be headed to Glendive, a less familiar pool to the swimmers, but Coach Pratt has faith that the team will swim strong.
“Whatever swimmers come, I will be very excited to watch,” Coach Pratt said. “I know they’ll still work hard and this week we will work even harder in practice and I know we will have a good meet this weekend.”
