Carney second, Bishop fifth in javelin, long relay takes seventh in Bozeman
The Malta Mustangs tied for seventeenth at the 2016 State B Track Meet that was held alongside the State A Meet at Van Winkle Stadium in Bozeman last Friday and Saturday.
Many athletes posted personal best with great effort, which is a good reflection of how tough Class B was this season.
"The competition in Class B as a whole is very good," Malta Head Coach Tad Schye said. "Our whole objective at the beginning of the year is to be ready for the district track meet, so we can place as many as we can. Our thing is to peak in the post-season and hope to peak three times."
Malta was led by Tyson Carney who placed second in javelin with a throw of 176-2, a new best.
Jace Bishop placed fifth in javelin with a throw of 164-6. Bishop also took thirteenth in the 800 with a time of 2:08.75 a new best.
"To get two of them in there with the javelin field that we had is pretty good," Coach Schye said.
The long relay team consisting of Ostin Welch, Carney, Jase Galt and Allen Williamson nearly placed for the second year in a row, but took seventh with a time of 3:33.65, their fastest time of the year.
"That was pretty close to the same time they ran last year, when they finished sixth," "They had a really great effort."
Devon Raybon took seventh in high jump after clearing 6-0 and nearly cleared 6-2.
"He had a really good jump at 6-2 and he just barely knocked it off," Coach Schye said.
The short relay team consisting of Welch, Carney, Galt and Williamson took sixteenth with a time of 46.41.
Welch took sixteenth in the 400 with a time of 54.36.
Galt took seventeenth in shot put after posting a throw of 41-2 ¼. It was a new personal best for Galt.
Coach Schye, who has led the M-ettes to four titles, gave credit to this season's assistant coaches.
Coach Amy Schye coached the distance runners and high jumpers. Coach Travis Somerfeld coached the hurdlers and javelin throwers. Coach Kalli Reintjes coached shot put and discus. He also expressed thanks to Coach Glenn Flatt who although is technically retired, volunteered to coach.
