One Nation, Under God
There will be an opportunity for the youth of Malta and Phillips County to learn the game of golf this summer as a result of a grant from the Montana Golf Association.
Malta High School golf coaches, Lynne and Jim Nevrivy wrote a grant for $1,000 to be used to purchase youth and teen golf clubs. The grant was selected to receive the full amount requested.
There will be a Junior Golf Camp this summer June 15, 16, and 17. This first camp will be for students going into grades 6-9. The camp will include golf, clubs, range balls, and lunch. Campers will also receive a t-shirt. "It is our hope that future youth golf camps will also include younger golfers as well," states Coach Nevrivy. "This is just a starting year, we really don't know what to expect yet."
Campers will be introduced to the basics of golf, the swing, chipping, putting, etiquette on the course, and course practice. Lunch will be provided by Marian Hills Golf Course. There will be a small fee for the three day event.
"We feel this will give our young people the opportunity to learn a sport that they can play and be involved in for the rest of their lives. We are hoping for a big turn out."
Camp information is available at the golf course and at Malta schools. You may call Marian Hills Golf Course at 654-1250.
"One of the best opportunities of receiving this grant, stated Coach Nevrivy, is that the clubs we purchase will be available for any youth golfer who wants to come out and golf for no charge, as long as they bring an adult with them. Physical education classes will also be using them as well."
The Montana State Golf Association is providing grants across the state for youth programs. To fund these grants the MSGA is holding a Trip-of-the-month Raffle. There are 24 chances to win. One ticket will be selected each month to win a trip and a second ticket will be selected to win $200. All tickets will be resubmitted for subsequent drawings. Only 300 tickets will be sold. All proceeds will be used to support junior golf programs in Montana. Tickets and information is available at Marian Hills Golf Course.
