Slipped one over

Last fall, Joe Brown purchased a number of trees for spring planting and hired a man to bury them in the ground until spring, when they would be taken up and set out to plant. A short time ago he secured the services of another man to do the work and fix up the ground around his home in this city and among other things he had a number of round holes dug for the trees. At the proper time, Joe marched like a major to the grave of the trees to have them taken up and after digging for a half day discovered the trees were never buried, but instead they were sold by the workman last fall. It is hard tines, but goes to demonstrate that Joe should have done the work himself.

Mr. Guthrie has planted some strawberries in his garden, the first, we believe, to be planted in this vicinity.

Zortman Brevities

Our gardens are not doing very well because of the snow flurries which occur daily, here in the Little Rockies.

It is rumored that there will be an interesting ball game here June 13th. Zortman vs. Grouse Gulch. Poor G.G.! Get a hustle on all you baseball fans, rolly!

Phillips County has been called on by the state selective service board to supply eight men for induction to the army June 5. This is the first call for men from this county which has been issued since the selective service was established. The reason for this is that of fulfillment of the National Guard quotas and voluntary enlistment in the army and navy have been in large in Phillips County, said local board clerk, Kenneth Liskum.

Eight men, three of them volunteers, are ready for induction. Volunteers and their order number are as follows:

Omund Halvorson of Forks, No. 955; Karl Lincoln Riley of Malta, No. 463, and Ben Lavadure of Butte, formerly of Zortman, No. 191.
