Penguins take second at home meet

The Whitewater Invitational is in the books after being postponed on April 28. The event took place last Thursday.

The Turner Tornadoes won the meet with 148. Whitewater took second with 104. Saco took third as a team with 42. Hays-Lodgepole took fourth with 30 and Dodson took fifth with 16.

Trace Simonson led Whitewater after winning five events that day. Trey Simanton wasn't far behind winning four events.

Early at the meet Simonson won the high jump after clearing 5-4.

"I feel pretty good," Simonson said. "It was my first time doing it."

He wasn't trained in the event and it was his first time trying high jump.

"I just had to jump high I guess," Simonson said.

Simonson also won the javelin by leaving a mark at 147-0. Simonson took first in shot put after posting a throw of 43-4.

"It was a nice morning to throw," Simonson said.

Simonson won triple jump with a distance of 37-4 and discus after posting a throw of 118-6.

Simonson hit 144 feet at the Top 10 meet in Glasgow last Tuesday and he won triple at the Gene Nelson Memorial in Wolf Point last Friday.

Trey Simanton took first in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 18.6. Simanton took first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.0. He also took first in long jump after clearing 17-8. It was his second consecutive year of winning the three events.

"I just had to keep a good pace," Simanton said about the hurdle events.

Simanton was one of only three hurdlers that day but it didn't faze him.

"I just compete with myself," Simanton said. "If I'm ahead, I try to strive for a better time."

Though he would've preferred there to be more competitors at the meet he knew the importance of competing with himself.

"I've learned it all from wrestling," he said. "Just learning to strive for greatness."

Simanton took first in the 800 with a time of 2:29.13. Simanton also took sixth in the high jump after clearing 4-10.

Cody Scheffelmear took first in the 200 with a time of 27.03. He took fourth in high jump after clearing 5-0 and sixth in long jump after a leap of 14-0.

Dodson's David Jaynes took second in shot put with a throw of 34-10 and second in discus with a throw of 63-5.

Saco was led by Chandler Pippin who took second in the 400 with a time of 1:07.13. Pippin also took second in the triple jump with a distance of 29-8.

"The season has been pretty good," Pippin said. "I've had some of my best runs and jumps so far."

Pippen took third in the 100 with a time of 13.83, third in the long jump with a leap of 14-7 and fourth in the 200 with a time of 29.85.

Pippin described the difference of approaching a 400 meter race and a 100 meter race.

"With the 100 you just kind of sprint the whole thing but the 400 you have to kind of pace yourself for most of it so you don't die."

Panther Josh Salveson had a good meet taking fourth in the 100 with a time of 14.34, fourth in the 200 with a time of 30.72 and fourth in long jump with a leap of 14-2.
