The Malta M-ettes showed great depth last Monday, April 18 in Glasgow as the team won the Scottie Qualifier Meet. The team had a total of 156 points. Glasgow took second after scoring 92 points. Circle took third after scoring 64 points. Plentywood was fourth after scoring 56.
The M-ettes were led by Sophia Stiles, Marley Manoukian, Kaitlyn Smith and Mystic Striker, who took first place in two events each. Mary Grace Kalal also won an event.
Stiles took first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.38 seconds. She also took first in long jump after leaving a mark at 17-4. She took second in the 200 after posting a time of 27.12 and second in the high jump with a jump of 5-0.
Smith had a monstrous throw of 140-4 in the javelin event, which was over twenty feet further than her closest opponent. Smith also took first in shot put with a throw of 36- ¾ which is her best throw of the season.
Marley Manoukian won the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.41.
“I tried to focus on not stuttering and getting my trail leg down on the track fast,” Manoukian said. “It was my best race of the year.”
She also won the triple jump after clearing 32-7 an event she qualified for state in earlier this season.
Manoukian also took third in the long jump, leaving a mark at 15-1 ½. The mark put her four inches from qualifying for state.
“I think I just have to work on keeping my speed up and getting a better board,” Manoukian said.
Mystic Striker won the 800 with a time of 2:33.57 and the 1600 with a time of 5:36.76.
Kalal took first place in discus after leaving a mark at 101-7. Kalal also took third in javelin with a throw of 112-9. Both throws were personal bests.
Hailey Nicholson took second in the 400, while posting a new personal best of 67.36. Nicholson also took sixth in the high jump after clearing 4-6.
Jada Nicholson took third in high jump after clearing 5-0 a new season best. She was a state placer in the event last season having cleared 5-2.
Jada was asked about how the season was going so far.
“It’s good and I’m trying my hardest,” she said.
J. Nicholson also finished eighth in the 200 with a time of 30.27.
Riley Mortenson took third place in the 800 with a time of 2:38. Mortenson also ran the 400 for the first time in her career and took fourth with a time of 70.10.
The relay teams were an important part of the Malta win with both teams placing at the event. Malta’s short relay team A consisting of Manoukian, Smith, J. Nicholson and H. Nicholson won their event with a time of 54.82.
The long relay team consisting of Mortenson, Striker, Schipman and H. Nicholson took forth with a time of 4:48.24.
Malta’s short relay team B consisting of Kyleigh Schipman, Taylor Gilkerson, Raleigh Hunter and Raina Mortenson took fifth with a time of 59.98.
TaChante Cole took fifth place in the 1600 with a time of 6:32.34 and seventh in the 800 with a time of 3:01.25.
Shelby Jones placed tenth in discus with a new personal best of 75-2. She also had a throw of 69-2 in javelin
