The Malta Mustangs track team is off to a good start this season and that continued at the Fergus Twilight Track Invitational last Tuesday, April 12. The Mustangs scored 73 points and placed third at the meet as a team. Fergus won the meet with 178.16 points and Joliet took second place with 91.16.
Though Malta has fared well in track meets Coach Tad Schye knows that the team hasn’t seen its full potential yet.
“We’ve had different kids gone for different events more so than we’ve had with the M-ettes, so it has affected our ability to score more points,” he said. “But the kids have been scoring well.”
Coach Schye admitted that he didn’t mind sharing students with other clubs because it gives the students great opportunities.
“A school our size, part of it is the experience of being in different athletics and different activities,” he said.
Junior Dominic Judd has been a tremendous addition to the team, taking first in both hurdle events. Judd had a time of 17.22 seconds in the 110 hurdles and a time of 43.11 in the 300 hurdles. Judd has already qualified for the 110 hurdles at the State B Meet.
“He’s a great addition to our track team,” Coach Schye said. “We’re just now getting him into shape. He’s a great kid to be around and work with. He’s a really positive addition to our team both as an athlete and a person.”
Junior Jace Bishop had a strong meet posting new bests in javelin, high jump and triple jump. He placed first in the javelin with a throw of 157-5. He took eighth in high jump after clearing 5-6 and eight in triple jump after leaving a mark at 36-5.
“Jace and Tyson (Carney) are pretty good throwers,” Coach Schye said. “Five or six feet separate them but in the javelin that’s not very far. They are good competition for each other.”
Devon Raybon took second in the high jump after clearing 5-8.
Malta’s long relay team consisting of Judd, Antonio Lopez, Ostin Welch and Allen Williamson took third place with a time of 3:49.44. The short relay team consisting of Judd, Williamson, Ant. Lopez and Andres Lopez took fourth with a time of 49.05.
Sophomore Ostin Welch took fourth in the 400 with a time of 55.75 and seventh in the 200 with a time of 24.87.
Kolter Schipman took fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:19.77.
Ant. Lopez took seventh in shot put after posting a throw of 37- ½. And. Lopez took tenth in shot put with a throw of 36-3.
Last week Jase Galt ran the 200 for Malta. It was his first MHSA sanctioned event since the football season.
