Alder Gulch in Limelight.

Word has just reached Malta from the Little Rockies that a big strike has been made at that point. The new find is in old Alder Gulch, two miles up the hill from Zortman, where considerable placer mining has been going for some time. The names of the lucky ones who were fortunate in discovering the hidden fortune are W. H. Pennington and Ed Meyers. This gives evidence that there is untold riches in the hills in the Little Rockies mining territory.

Sweet Potato King

Dave Sollenberger is known in and around Malta as a successful well driller, pump expert and farmer. During the 1940 growing season he was also engaged in the culture of sweet potatoes. His success was so remarkable that he has been dubbed the "sweet potato king" of this district. The production of big, fine-flavored tubers of extra quality marketed so quickly and profitably as to leave no doubt in his mind that this palatable vegetable, if given proper care, could not be generally grown here.

Dutch's gun – Who has it?

The Bureau of Land Management and the Phillips County Sheriff's Office are renewing their efforts to recover a piece of history stolen from the Philips County Museum.

Special Agent Tom Madeson of the BLM said Tuesday that thousands of posters are being sent out to "all the major gun shows and gun collection houses across the nation" offering a reward for return of a .45 caliber Colt Bisley revolver which once belonged to the infamous outlaw Dutch Henry.

"Somebody out there knows where that gun went. People have seen it," he said.

The revolver was reported stolen from a glass-enclosed display case at the Philips County Museum on October 23, 2004. It was on long-term loan from the Montana Historical Society and had been donated by the Jim Watkins family.
