Malta GOLF 2016

Malta features eleven first time golfers

The Malta golf team has five returning golfers this season, all of which were quality golfers in 2015, but those five golfers will be joined by a total of 11 brand new golfers.

Keenan VanWichen had a solid junior season as the team's number one golfer.

"Last year he was number one," Coach Lynn Nevrivy told the PCN. "He's just going to stay in that position but Hunter and Landon are hot on his trail."

So how close are Hunter Love and Landon VanWichen to Keenan? Apparently one to two strokes behind him.

"That's our top three," Coach Nevrivy said. "It might change every meet. They may not be one, two and three every meet. They'll mix it up probably."

Coach Nevrivy praised her returning five golfers for getting in games during the summer.

"I see three of those guys out there all of the time," She said. "Some of them have summer jobs, so they don't put in as much time as we would like but they get out when they can."

The other two returning varsity golfers are junior Cru Darrah and Grant O'Brien.

While she is proud of the efforts the returning golfers have put in, Coach Nevrivy knows there is plenty of practice to be had.

"I think those five boys need to put in a little more time and start buckling down," she said. "Now we have meets and one week will have three meets. All five of those boys are capable of doing very, very well."

The team will have five new boys, including Grayson Waters, Peyton Meeks, Jacob Czereda, Miles Bunk and Ben Campbell.

"Grayson has been working really hard," Coach Nevrivy said. "He went out this summer and played some golf. They are all working really hard.

The team will also have six girls, who hope to form a solid four girl squad to make state with four teams out of the division being able to qualify this season.

"Last year our division did not have four golf teams," Coach Nevrivy said. "If we would have had a girls team they would have qualified.

The girls are senior Jenise Amestoy, and freshmen Chayana Stolem, Chloe Hunter, Kloie Marks, Reba Doucette and Erika Nagy.

Coach Nevrivy is impressed with the swing that Amestoy has, but she wishes she had more time with her.

"Chayana is driving the ball really good," Coach Nevrivy said. "She, Chloe and Kloie are pretty even."

"It was amazing that I've had six people come out to golf that have never golfed before," Coach Nevrivy said. "They are showing a lot of enthusiasm, that's for sure. We're trying to make it fun for them so hopefully they can enjoy the game and they'll stick with it."
