Young Coyotes aim for Eastern C
The Dodson Coyotes will have a young but competitive team this season even after losing Trevor Banyai to graduation last season. Banyai was strong part of Dodson's three-man team last season doing well in the jumping events.
Coach Tianna Bloomer was an assistant coach last season but she will be leading Dodson this year as Head Coach. Coach Ryan Lefdahl, who was a state discus and shot put athlete, will assist Coach Bloomer this season.
This season the team has grown, though only three of six athletes listed will be available for the starting four meets.
Sophomore David Jaynes will likely lead the charge for Dodson, but Jaynes is recovering from an ankle injury.
Jaynes was a strong competitor in 3C last season though he didn't qualify for the Eastern C last season. Jaynes did post impressive throws in discus and shot put. He also ran an impressive 62.84 in the 400 meter run.
This season Jaynes will participate in shot put, discus and javelin as well.
Freshman Tyrese Messerly has been quite the athlete in junior high track and high school basketball. This season Messerly will take on the high jump, 1600 and 800 runs.
"He's clearing the bar well," Coach Bloomer said. "If he pushes himself, he should do really well in the (1600)."
Bloomer stated that his 1600 times during practice have been around the six minute mark.
"He's improved twenty seconds every time we've timed him," Coach Bloomer said.
Messerly posted a time of 2:48.11 in Glasgow last Saturday. He also posted a time of 6:35.57 in the 1600 and cleared 5-2 in the high jump.
Freshman Trevor Walker also saw his first high school meet last Saturday in Glasgow.
Walker posted a jump of 12-2 on his first attempt at long jump last Saturday. He also posted a time of 14.52 in the 200 and a throw of 26-2.5 in shot put.
"He's a fast sprinter," Coach Bloomer said of Walker. "In practice he has been running the 100 in under fifteen seconds."
Walker will also compete in the 100 meter dash.
Senior Cleo Cole Jr. will run in the 100 meter dash and will participate in the shot put, discus and javelin. It is his first year of track and field, but Cole may make a splash in the throwing events given his natural strength which was seen in basketball.
"Right now we're working on getting enough practices to get him to compete," Coach Bloomer said.
Sophomore Cain Wing is another new track and field athlete, who will run in the 100 and 200 races as well as high and long jump.
"He's very quick and he can jump really high, so there's really good potential there," Coach Bloomer said.
Wing's potential will have to wait to be seen as he will not be able to attend meets until later in the season.
Junior Shawnee Kill Eagle will be Dodson's lone girl this season but she will participate in the 400, 800 and 1600 meter runs.
Kill Eagle only needs a couple more practices and she should be able to compete this weekend in the Nashua meets.
