One Nation, Under God

It has been an honor

When there is a basketball game happening I am typicaly on the baseline trying to get a few good shots for our newspaper. After being at a couple of games in Malta’s run at the Northern B Divisional Tournament, I decided that I would sit with my wife and son for the first time since I started this job.

I was out of sorts because I knew I would be sitting in the crowd this game but my wife was all for it. I don’t know if you were at last Saturday’s game, but she was looking pretty stunning and I felt like the luckiest man in the audience with her by my side.

The game didn’t go our way, unfortunately, but it will always be one of my favorite memories because of how happy my wife and son were to hang out with me.

I do want to say ‘thank you’ to this year’s Mustang team, who has played hard throughout the last few years and had another competitive season this year. This particular team has shown great mental toughness, never giving up and fighting to the bitter end.

This year’s senior class was also the last of the first athletes I have covered.

The first story I ever wrote was about the Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers and I remember being in awe of the whole team but the biggest surprise was writing about a freshman Tatum Moore, who has been a stellar point guard in her four years with the co-op.

I was mildly emotional knowing that next season she wouldn’t be in Mavericks colors.

I feel just equally proud of several Mustangs like Allen Williamson, who came out strong in his sophomore season and has grown into a strong competitor and leader for Malta.

Tyson Carney is another that has stood out because of his heart, athleticism and determination. I always thought it was funny that it seemed offenses tried their hardest to avoid Carney who was a shut down corner for the Mustangs in football.

Devon Raybon was the first person of African-American descent in the area I encountered other than myself and I’m just proud of how he has developed as a basketball player considering the pressure that the sport can bring.

I know the ride is over for the Mustangs and Lady Mavericks but I have appreciated talking to all of the students and coaches this season. It has been a joy and I hope that you can look back at your high school careers with pride. Thanks for the memories, it has been an honor.
