Dodson, North Country face uphill battle in 3C

The North Country Mavericks fell to fourth in the 3C district after a loss to Lustre last Friday night in Hinsdale. With only three teams advancing to the divisional round in Wolf Point on Wednesday, February 24.

Dodson seems like a long shot to make it into the divisional tournament, but stranger things have happened in Montana basketball. Currently with two wins under their belt, neither of which have been in conference, Dodson has a chance to shock the district.

In order to advance the Mavericks and Coyotes, they will need to win at least three games this weekend.

The Mavericks will face off against Nashua in the opening game of the tourney. The Mavericks have had their way with Nashua this season picking up a 47-43 win against them early in January and a 71-47 win against them in late January. A win against Nashua would put them in a semi-final game against Scobey, 3C’s first seed. A loss to Nashua would put them in an elimination game against the loser of game four.

Dodson’s first opponent will be Lustre, a team that Dodson has struggled with this season.

If the Coyotes can defeat Lustre, the team will have a chance to avenge their 83-22 loss to Frazer on the team’s Senior Night last Friday night in Dodson. A loss will put the Coyotes against the loser of game three.

In the Mavericks’ 61-46 win against Lustre the team was led by Cache Younkin who scored 17 points. Trace Simonson scored 14 points. Chris DePuydt scored six points. Layne Engel, Logan McColly, Channing Mavencamp and John McColly had two points apiece. Wrangler Jones had one point.
