Mustangs place five in State Wrestling Tourney

The Malta-Whitewater wrestling team will be represented by five wrestlers in the 2016 State B/C Wrestling Tournament in Billings this Friday and Saturday. Along with placing five wrestlers in the tournament Malta placed fourth in the Northern B/C Divisional in Chinook last Saturday. Choteau won the event with a score of 152. Fairfield-Simms placed second with 145 and Chinook placed third with 143.

The team will be led by Trey Simanton, who defeated Choteau’s Trevor Moore in the 126 pound weight class championship last Saturday. Simanton defeated Moore in a 7-1 decision.

Simanton won third place at state in last year’s 113 weight class.

Sophomore Kaden Moore is also making his second state appearance, though this year he will be participating in the 132 pound class after taking second in the Division Tournament in Chinook. He earned second place after making it to the championship match, though he lost the match to Cole Giles of Fairfield-Sims by an 11-1 major decision. Last year he wrestled in the 120 pound class.

Also wrestling at state in the 132 class will be Ceaton Mears, who defeated Shelby’s Brodey White by an 11-1 major decision.

Freshman Kolter Schipman took second in the 120 pound class after losing the championship match to Shelby’s Wyatt Brusven by a 4-1 decision.

Jordan Pierce took fourth place in the Northern B/C Divisional by making it to the Consolation Championship in the 170 pound class. Pierce lost the match to Cut Bank’s Jace Berkram near the end of the second round by pin fall. The match was scored 17-14 before the pin.
