After defeating Scobey, Lady Mavs look to sweep district

The now 13-4 North Country Lady Mavericks have locked up first place in the 3C conference after defeating the Scobey Spartans 50-42 in Scobey last Friday evening. Their second victory against Scobey wasn’t as gaudy as their 60-31 victory in January, but with only one more conference game against Lustre Christian remaining, a win against the Lady Lions would give the Lady Mavericks a perfect record against 3C opponents in the regular season.

The team’s matchup against Lustre is set for Friday at 6 p.m.

Tatum Moore led the Mavericks in their victory over Scobey with 18 points.

Mickayla Johnson also had a strong game, scoring 15 points. Kayleigh Cummings had seven points. Jada Sudbrack had seven points and Casity Boucher had four points.

“It wasn’t one of our best games by any means and I feel like Scobey should be competitive with us,” Head Coach Amber Erickson said. “They have good athletes; they have quite a few kids that they run in and out of the game.”

Coach Erickson knew that on Scobey’s home floor there wasn’t going to be a blowout.

“They played a pretty good game against us on their end,” Coach Erickson said.

The Lady Mavericks took a 12-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The team also outscored Scobey 13-11 in the second quarter. The halftime score was 25-18.

The Mavericks were held to single digits in the third quarter, but they still outscored Scobey 9-6. The end of quarter score was 34-24.

The Spartans fought back hard with an 18 point output, but the Lady Mavericks held on by scoring 16 of their own, but the game ended in favor of North Country.

The Mavericks have experienced a lot of growth so far in this season, having to fill large shoes left by an impressive 2015 graduating class. The team’s dominance of the 3C conference this season has been an encouraging sign.

“I think they’ve responded extremely well,” Coach Erickson said. “I knew that we were going to be a solid team again because of that tough sophomore class, we have Tatum back as our only returning starter and we have Kayleigh in the junior position.”

Coach Erickson was sure that the team could compete for a district championship. Now she is even more optimistic that the team can go even further.

“As the season went on and everybody had stepped up and filled their roles, along with the team’s chemistry and good senior leadership, now my mindset has changed a lot,” Coach Erickson said. “It’s not that we can just play for a district championship, I’m thinking more along the lines that we can get back to state again. It’s pretty exciting.”
