The North Country Mavericks rolled to a three win week after taking down, Dodson, Glasgow and Roy-Winifred last week. They will face Frazer in Frazer this Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Nashua in Saco at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The team defeated Dodson 61-22 in Dodson last Thursday. Then North Country won a close 39-33 game to Glasgow last Friday in Saco. They made short work of Roy-Winifred last Saturday, defeating the Outlaws 63-45 in Roy-Winifred.
In their win against Dodson, Sophomore Trace Simonson led the team with 23 points, ten of which came in the third quarter.
Junior Cache Younkin had 16 points, while also knocking down three treys in the process. John McColly had six points. Layne Engel had five points. Logan McColly had four points. Wrangler Jones had three points. Channing Mavencamp and Robert Barche had two points each.
"Our defense by far helped us win," said Engel. "We stopped a lot of passes and didn't let them score much in the game."
Up until the mid-point of the second quarter it seemed as though the teams were evenly matched. North Country was held to seven points, while Dodson only scored four.
"We weren't making our shots and they were," Engel said of the team's slow start.
North Country would widen the gap before halftime, racking up 16 second quarter points. Dodson was held 11 points, making the halftime score 23-15.
"I think we played together pretty well in the second half and kind of pulled away from them," Simonson said. "They kept it pretty close in the first half. We didn't play very good, didn't pass the ball very well."
North Country would pour it on in the third quarter, scoring 27 while holding Dodson to a single 2-point bucket. The score at the end of the third was 50-17.
North Country would put up 11 in the final quarter while holding Dodson to five.
Simonson has been enjoying the new Maverick co-op between Saco, Whitewater and Hinsdale schools; he said the addition of Hinsdale to the old Saco-Whitewater co-op has been an easy fit.
"We get along pretty well because we have played on a few spring teams together growing up," Simonson said. "We all know each other pretty well."
Simonson doesn't often shoot from the three point line, but he knocked down one of his three attempts against Dodson.
"I was wide open and I kind of knew that I would make it," he said of the shot. "I missed a couple in the first half but they were not good shots."
In the team's win against Glasgow, Younkin had 12 points, Simonson had eight points, Engel had seven, L. McColly had seven, DePuydt had three and J. McColly had two.
In their win against Roy-Winifred, Simonson had 18 points, Younkin had 16 points, Jones had 11 points, J. McColly had six points, L. McColly had four points and Mavencamp had two points.
