The North Country Mavericks are off to an impressive 8-3 record in the co-op's inaugural season. The team added a win to their record after defeating the Lustre Christian Lions 46-40 in Lustre last Friday night.
"It went really well," Mavericks Head Coach Mitch Capdeville told the PCN. "We played a good team and had well-rounded scoring from everyone."
The Mavericks were led by Cache Younkin who had 13 points.
The team's lead scorers Younkin and Trace Simonson were in early foul trouble and missed a majority of the second quarter.
"We played a lot of that game without them," Coach Capdeville said.
Despite losing part of his finger in an off-court incident a month ago, Layne Engel has been steadily returning back to form. He put up eight points in the win.
"He had a good game," Coach Capdeville said. "We've been kind of waiting for him. You kind of have the fear factor with that finger, he tried to do most things with his other hand and he's kind of getting over it and shooting with both hands."
Simonson and Wrangler Jones each had seven points in the win. Channing Mavencamp and John McColly each had four points. Chris DePuydt had three points.
The Mavericks struggled to score in the first quarter, putting up only nine points, however their defense was fierce only allowing five points.
In the second quarter both teams scored 12 points. In the third quarter, North Country outscored Lustre 14 to 11. The Mavericks would hold to their lead in the fourth quarter to win 46-40.
"I just thought we did a really good job defensely and all-around," Coach Capdeville said.
The team will have a game against Dodson tomorrow night in Dodson at 7:30 p.m. They will then take on Glasgow in Saco at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night and then travel to Winifred-Roy to try to sweep the Outlaws.
"We will have our hands full (against Winifred)," Coach Capdeville said. "We beat them up there but we shot the ball extremely well. In all three of these games we will have to concentrate on our defense and our offense will come. If we can hold teams to forty-five points or less, we will be right there to win."
The team lost to Glasgow 66-33 earlier in the season, but the Mavericks will try to prove they are a different team this time around.
"Last time we didn't play very good there," Coach Capdeville said noting that nothing went their way. "I expect a different game this time. I realize thirty-three points is a lot to overcome but I don't see it as impossible."
