M-ettes remain undefeated after facing Glasgow, Shelby

The M-ettes remain undefeated after posting wins against Glasgow and Shelby last week. The team defeated Glasgow 56-34 in Glasgow last Thursday. They then defeated Shelby 62-15 in Malta on Saturday evening.

The team will face Harlem in Harlem tomorrow night. The last time these teams met on December 18, Malta defeated Harlem 67-14.

"We just have to anticipate that Harlem is going to be a little more comfortable at home and we have to get ready the best that we can this week," Coach Nate Hammond told the PCN.

Though the team already defeated Harlem once, don't expect the M-ettes to take the Lady Cats lightly.

"Our kids know that every time we come out and play it's a good opportunity to get better at some things that we need to get better at," Coach Hammond said.

In the team's win against Glasgow, Malta was led by Hailey Nicholson who had 18 points, nine steals and nine rebounds.

Sophia Stiles had 14 points, seven assists, five steals, four rebounds and one block. Jada Nicholson had eight points and six rebounds. Marley Manoukian had eight points and four rebounds. Eva Harms had three points and five rebounds. Adrianna Bibeau and Mary Kalal each had two points. Shay Garfield had one point and three rebounds.

"Glasgow has some really good players," Coach Hammond said. "They only lost one senior to graduation from last year's team. They were pretty experienced and were pretty good."

Malta had 23 points off of 27 forced turnovers. The team was 23-of-59 (38 percent) from the field and knocked down two of their seven three point attempts (28 percent). The team was eight for sixteen from the charity stripe (50 percent).

Glasgow showed some resistance in the third quarter putting up 18 points on the M-ettes but other than that Malta dominated the game giving up only seven in the first, two in the second and five in the fourth.

"We felt like Glasgow played pretty hard, they rebounded well and shot well," Coach Hammond said. "We did well in the first half but we gave up 18 points in the third quarter, but we got ourselves back together in the fourth quarter and hung on for a good solid win."

The M-ettes cleaned up their shooting percentages against the Shelby Coyotes in Malta last Saturday, shooting 27-of-49 (55 percent) from the field and three of six from the perimeter (50 percent). The team was also five of six (83 percent) from the charity stripe.

"Our kids did a good job right off the bat," Coach Hammond said. "We played hard and played good defense again. It was a good night for us. We shot really well."

Stiles led the M-ettes with 13 points, nine steals, eight assists and a block.

H. Nicholson had a strong outing, posting a 12 point, 11 rebound double-double. J. Nicholson had 12 points. Manoukian had 11 points and six assists. Kalal had six points. Bibeau had four points and four rebounds. Garfield had two points and four rebounds. Harms had two points and three rebounds.

The M-ettes had 35 points off of 27 forced turnovers. The team also posted 26 rebounds, 17 steals, 16 assists and four blocks.

The team comprised mostly of the team's bench players did not give up any points in the fourth quarter.

"We were kind of rotating four in at a time," Coach Hammond said. "Defensively it doesn't really matter who I bring in, everybody on our team is tough defensively. Sometimes we have a tougher time scoring without the main kids in but defensively, I think we're just as tough."
