One Nation, Under God
For the past few years I have been spoiled during the Christmas season because my wife Susan has not only blessed me with an abundance of gifts.
It hasn’t only been the amount of gifts, but the quality as well. It doesn’t end there. She gets so excited about the gifts she gives me that she always lets me open them well before Christmas. Feeling I need to reciprocate, I always let her un-wrap hers as well.
This year we came close to waiting as most of America does, but less than one week to go, she couldn’t help it. Boy do I have it good.
I’m not the most patient person in the world and that may have stemmed from Christmastime as a kid.
Patience is a virtue. As a kid day by day my brothers and I would see gifts added to the tree. There weren’t any sneak peeks when I was younger. We weren’t allowed to open any presents on Christmas Eve. We had no choice but to wait for Christmas morning.
We didn’t just have to wait till Christmas morning; everyone had to wake up and we would open presents as a family.
On a regular day in my house, I was typically the last one to fall asleep and the first to wake up, so when Christmas morning came, I was extra eager knowing that a few gifts were coming my way.
I used to get up so early that my parents added a new rule that 6:30 was the earliest I was allowed to try and wake them.
After weeks and weeks of waiting to open presents, Christmas morning was always a yearly highlight.
Our parents were always amazing at picking out gifts; in fact I think they had spies around us to find out what we wanted. I think that may be why it was so hard to wait until “Santa Claus” came.
I can see why it is good to have your children wait until Christmas to open their gifts. Patience is something that doesn’t come naturally to humans but there are many instances where it is way better to wait than just rip the paper off.
