Power line may come

Indications at present are that the Montana Power Company may extend its high power transmission line east from Havre to points as far as Malta, says the Havre Plaindealer. Representatives of the company are said to be looking over the town to the east of Havre now, and if the demand is sufficiently large it is possible that not later than the early spring the company will start construction of a transmission line to furnish the cities east of Havre with electricity.

Malta School Notes

The new electrical fixtures are very ornamental. Lack of "juice" makes them useless, just when they might be of the most service. After school is the only time the teachers have to themselves in the school room and darkness cuts that short.

Another letter to Santa

Tell the little boys and girls that my reindeer are going along pretty well now. I received some more letters from Saco. Tell the little boy who wants an elephant that I have one but it wont lead and it is to big to carry so I told it to pack its trunk and come anyway, but the elephants are so slow it might get stuck in the snow .

My but there are lots of good boys and girls around Saco, I would just like to stay there. – Santa Claus

Brands to be recorded

Montana, famed cattle state, is beginning the enormous job of bringing up to date a list of some 53,000 brands recorded with the state livestock commission by cattle owners who have stock on Treasure State ranges.

Montana law, since 1921, has required re-recording of brands every 10 years.

850 children get treats from Santa

About 850 children greeted Santa Claus Saturday in downtown Malta and received their treats. He flew into the airport with Gene Mendal where he was met by Henry Compton with his team and buggy and escorted to downtown Malta by the police and Robert Veseth in his sound car playing Christmas songs.

This was Santa's 12th annual visit sponsored by the Phillips County Saddle Club and despite foul weather has managed to treat the Phillips County children. Last year the club boxed the treats and sent them to the rural schools because of the stormy conditions that made it impossible for the children to meet Santa.

Economy looking good

While national news media continues to try to get a fix on the United States' economy, the PCN has found the local business picture shows no signs of the recession and has a positive outlook toward 1991.

The PCN surveyed several Malta business owners on Monday and Tuesday and found that all were reporting good to above average sales for the Holiday season and most reported better than average sales overall.

Louie Miller, manager of Valley Motors Supply Company, -- proudly exclaimed that 1990 was going to be the best sales year ever for his store.

"Best year VMS has ever had in Malta. Our sales reports already show 20 percent increase over our previous best year, and that doesn't include the month of December."
