One Nation, Under God

Malta Lutheran Church hosted annual feed

Last Thursday most of the country celebrated Thanksgiving. On a Thursday a couple of weeks prior, November 12, The Malta Lutheran Church hosted its Annual Martin Luther Dinner, where hundreds were in attendance.

The Malta Luther Men in Mission hosted the free-will donation-fundraiser event, which featured food, fellowship, music compliments of Larry Swingen and Eric Engebretson.

This marked the eleventh year that the dinner has had its modern twist on the meal, which for decades featured lutefisk and lefse, the former a strong-smelling dish, made by preserving Atlantic Cod in a solution of lye which is then cooked.

“There aren’t too many Lutefisk people out, Martin Luther was German so we went to the German cuisine,” Rick Mikkelson told the PCN. “We had Swedish meatballs because we’ve got to keep the Scandinavians happy.”

“They would revolt,” Mikkelson continued, jokingly.

The modern version of the Martin Luther Dinner is headlined by German sausage made by Robert Plouffe of Saco Pay-n-Save and Swedish Meatballs were made by Leonard Leader. Leader also made sauerkraut to go with the German Sausage.
