Patty's Floral, Art Spot sponsor Iconic Art Contest

Artist receive cash prizes, paintings for sale at Art Spot

Patty Simons, owner of Patty’s Floral and Greenhouse, saw what a group of people were doing in Big Sandy, Mont., and decided it would be a good fit for Phillips County. The idea was to have students at local schools paint or draw pictures of iconic locations throughout the county, pick some winners and award some prizes.

Simons got together with Kathy Bagley at Malta’s Art Spot to hammer out the details and a short time later, when the contest had run its course, nearly 50 entries were submitted and last week the winners were announced.

Malta High School’s Dominick Judd earned first place for his pen and ink drawing of the Villa Theatre (on page 1A of this week’s paper) and earned $50 for his winning entry. Eva Harms, also of MHS, earned $40 for her second place drawing of the footbridge at Trafton Park, Sophia Hebert from Dodson Junior High earned $30 for her third place watercolor painting of the H.G. Robinson house and Melanie Fetter earned fourth place for her watercolor painting of the old Zortman Jail.

Receiving honorable mention were Francis Werk and Tanner Smith, both of M.H.S.

“I thought they were all fantastic,” said Mardy Demarais who works at Patty’s and helped Bagley judge the entries. “The kids had limited time to complete their work so for the first year of the contest, we were very pleased with all the entries.”

The top four finishers will now have the honor of having their artwork framed and for sale – the artwork can currently be viewed and the original purchased at the Art Spot – as well as having their artwork scanned and all placed on the front of 4x8 notecards which are also for sale at Patty’s. If the original pieces of art are sold, Art Spot and the artists will each get a portion of the money raised from the notecards at Patty’s and will help defer the costs of the prize money and framing and printing costs.

Demarais said this is the first time the contest has been held, but most likely not the last.

“We are planning on holding it again,” she said. “We will try to vary it every year, maybe different years, but these turned out really nice.”

To see the art on display, head over to the Art Spot and to purchase notecards, visit Patty’s Floral which is open from 11:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (and during the holiday season the store is open on some weekends) or contacted at 654-1951.
