The North Country Mavericks enter the District 3C Volleyball Tournament at Scobey High School this Friday at the second seed after defeating Lustre 3-2 last Friday and Brockton 3-0 last Saturday.
The wins gave the Mavericks an overall record of 10-6 and a conference record of 7-3. Taking second in the district has given North Country a first round bye. North Country will have their first game at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the Nashua / Brockton game.
North Country is 2-0 against Brockton this season but has split the series with Nashua, who knocked Saco-Hinsdale out of the District 3C Tournament last Saturday.
On the other side of the bracket, are the Scobey Spartans the reigning district champs. The Spartans have the first place bye for the second consecutive year. Scobey will face the winner of the Lustre Christian / Opheim game.
Lustre Christian shocked Scobey in their last meeting, so if North Country can win their first game, it may not be too farfetched to think they can see Lustre in match seven.
The Mavericks are 2-0 against Lustre; however Lustre gave North Country a good match after adding a few transfer students.
"Every team should be gearing up for the tournaments and that's exactly what they were doing and that's exactly what we did," Mavericks Head Coach Kathy Siroky said. "We are going to fix a few things and head on to the next game."
Only two teams will advance to the Eastern Divisional meet in Sidney on November 5-7.
In the Maverick's 3-2 win against Lustre in Lustre last Friday the scores were 19-25, 19-25, 25-11, 25-22 and 15-13.
The team was led by Tatum Moore who had 11 kills of 30 and 14 of 41 digs. Delaney Beil had all 23 assists. Mickayla Johnson had six of nine blocks.
The team fell behind 0-2 against the Lady Lions but the team made some adjustments.
"They had some girls that are now eligible to play," Coach Siroky said. "They are pretty tall in the front so we had a little trouble with them but we fixed a few things and we were able to prevail."
In their 3-0 victory against Brockton in Brockton, the scores were 25-9, 25-12, 25-13.
"We decreased our errors in serving," Coach Siroky said. "It was a game to end with because it was nice to get everybody some play time."
Coach Siroky expressed confidence in her team's growth overall.
"We will continue to work on the little things," she said. "I'm confident they and all the little things are coming together. We're putting together little things to make big things happen."
