One Nation, Under God
I really wish I could’ve jumped on the Cubs bandwagon this post-season…. But honestly, I just couldn’t do it.
No matter how many seasons they have under .500, I just can’t abandon my White Sox and it felt like if I cheered for the Cubbies, I would be in the wrong.
People ask, how can you be from Chicago and not like a team representing your city?
Looking from the outside that is a valid question but for some reason sports can bring out the worst of people.
It’s ridiculous when you look at things from a logical standpoint. Case and point, when that poor punter from Australia botched a simple punt play that resulted in a game winning fumble return in the last seconds in the Michigan v. Michigan St. game.
After that punter’s snafu cost the Wolverines a game that they would have otherwise won, people on social media sites showed how ugly failure in sports could be.
Statements were made saying the punter should harm himself to the point of death.
I know people say, “there’s no way he meant what he said.”
I’m not convinced he didn’t mean it.
Call it a show of immaturity, lack of class or whatever, but statements like that should have no place in our world.
Throughout my time as sports-writer I have seen a few cases of our kids here attacking each other through social media and I’ve got to say it’s pathetic, especially when half of those people are graduates of our local schools.
I’ve always been against social media sites for minors. Kids should be kids and some adults need to step away from the computer.
It is strongly disheartening when people wear their hearts on a computer screen, no matter what age you are. It’s even worse when other people bash those feelings.
I understand having fun, but there’s no reason to be vulgar, condescending or flagrant behind your keyboard or in life. Have some shame.
I am done griping about how social media is wasting lives and time.
My son PJ has made a few appearances at local games throughout the season.
In the football game last Friday against Glasgow, he was a little disgruntled. It could have been because of the cold or maybe because he needed to go to sleep at the time the game started. I can’t say for sure.
It was funny to me that when the game was over he ran from the stands to the field and was on cloud nine when he saw me. I love when he interrupts my post game interviews to give me a hug.
If you see a camera flash in your general direction during a game, it’s just me getting my son’s attention. Don’t worry it won’t make print… Unless you’re picking your nose, then you’re in trouble.
