One Nation, Under God
The Mustangs showed no mercy last Friday as the team lit up the Poplar Indians 71-0. Now standing 3-1, the Mustangs look primed for a favorable spot in the post-season with all other teams in 2B battling to reach .500.
As for Malta, the team hopes to add to their three game winning streak this week against the 2-2 Shelby Coyotes, a team they haven't faced since October of 2010.
In the first week, Shelby blew out Harlem 58-0 and then defeated Lincoln County 32-14, but since have been on a two game losing streak, dropping games to Manhattan and Conrad.
The Mustangs can expect a tougher challenge this week, against a Coyote team that can move the ball proficiently through the air.
"They pass a lot, which is actually good for us," senior Mustang Allen Williamson told the PCN. "Our pass defense is pretty solid."
After the blowout, one could imagine that it would be hard to focus on the next game. Malta seems to have a good approach.
"(We will) have a good hard week of practice and we just have to stay focused," Williamson said.
Fellow senior Kalen Wiebe added some insight.
"We have a silent locker room," Wiebe said. "It really prepares your mind for what the game is going to be like. You get yourself mentally ready and a lot of it is mental readiness for the game."
In last Friday's win against the Indians, Malta's first team offense barely got touched as they scored on every possession they had.
The game started out with a patient 88 yard kick return by Williamson, who followed his blockers right into the end zone. Williamson would ultimately account for four Mustang touchdowns.
"I was just waiting for all the blockers to get someone and when they did I saw a wide open hole," Williamson said. "It was good blocking."
On the ensuing kickoff, sophomore Trey Simanton not only wrapped up the returner, he pulled the ball right out of his hands and set the Mustangs up deep into Poplar territory. Williamson would score a three yard rushing touchdown only a few plays later. Mustangs up 13-0.
On Malta's next possession Williamson would score on a 24 yard run. Mustangs 19-0.
Williamson only had a few touches that game, but all of them went for touchdowns.
"I gotta give a shout out to Kolter Schipman for helping me out with everything," Williamson said. "Getting ready for the games, he's always helping me."
His next score would come on a 69 yard punt return after the defense forced a three-and-out. Mustangs 25-0.
Trace Simonson would be the next Mustang to reach pay dirt on a 40 yard touchdown run. Mustangs 32-0.
On the next score, Tyson Carney would haul in a 13 yard pass off of a short Jase Galt throw. Mustangs 38-0.
The next score would be a pass connection from Galt to Derek Peigneux, who took the ball 39 yards for his first
