Saco School honors grandparents

"Grandparents so of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children." - Saying on reader board at Saco School.

Saco School welcomed grandparents and special people through their doors last Wednesday for a breakfast in their honor followed by singing, skits and family portraits to help remember the occasion for years to come.

"I don't think there is anybody left out in town," Saco School Superintendent Gordon Hahn told the crowd before breakfast was served. Over 100 people piled into the school's cafeteria as the chow line snaked through the west entrance, went all the way across the length of the room's stage and up to the serving station.

Before folks started showing up, head cook Vicki Ellsworth and her crew were hard at work getting breakfast prepared and decorating the tables in the cafeteria. Ellsworth's menu for the event included waffles, fresh strawberries, pineapple, pluots ( a cross between a plum and an apricot) and blueberries, sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, and hash browns.

Ellsworth, who has been at Saco for 15 years, said that the Grandparents Day has been going on in Saco for at least the past 10 years and attendance is always strong, though she added that if harvesting isn't done yet, the numbers dip a little.

"The grandparents really, really enjoy it," Ellsworth said. "And we enjoy hosting it."

All told, Ellsworth and her staff served five dozen eggs, almost 150 waffles and 10 pounds of sausage. While breakfast was being served, several Saco students performed skits. One of the skits featured a grandfather and grandson who decided they wanted to spend some time with each other. Grandpa wanted to play cards and grandson wanted to play a basketball video game. As the skit progressed, grandson couldn't get the game controller away from Grandpa as Grandpa promised "just let me score one more basket." Grandson took the deck of cards and left Grandpa to his new video game.

Following the skits, Mrs. Quinones K-through-5 music classes performed two songs for the honored guests. The first tune was High-Hey and the second was Happy Grandparent's Day. Both songs were well received.

Before it was all said and done, Supt. Hahn thanked everyone for showing up and the kitchen crew for supplying the wonderful breakfast.
