September 16, 1915

Malta School News

The enrollment in the high school grades is 25, which is eight more than were listed at the same time last year. As more are yet to enroll, the high school membership will almost double this year.

The entire school enrollment has reached the 200 mark and more are coming every day.

Local News

The first snow storm of the season struck this section last Friday but did not amount to very much except to make the roads muddy.

Reports from Zortman state that "Jum" Dozark got the decision in a six round bout that was pulled off in the hills on Friday night. His opponent was Jimmy Mullins from Seattle.

The temporary wooden structure that was used to support the city fire bell before it was placed on the City Hall, was taken down this week by Commissioner Vert. It formally stood on the lot next to the office of B.W. Brockway.

September 19, 1940

New members of Girl Scout Troop are honored

New members of the Girl Scout Troop No. 2 were honored at a dinner party held at the Woman's Civic Clubhouse last Thursday night. The honored guests were Betty Jane Klemme, Joan Funk, Shirley Clark, Mary Parker, Gloria Flesche, Jean Robinson, Harriet Jean Erickson, Lila Crossen and LaVera Crossen.

A scavenger hunt followed by dancing at the clubhouse formed the evening's entertainment.

September 16, 1965

Future of Little Rockies discussed at meeting

Proposed plans for the development of the Little Rockies area was the subject of the hearing held at Zortman last Friday night to talk over whether the BLM or the Forest Service should have jurisdiction over the area.

Townsites for Zortman and Landusky, recreation developments and of management and protection of all resources in the Little Rockies were discussed with 58 people in attendance.

Mrs. Stella Peck honored on 80th year observance

Mrs. Stella Peck was honored on her 80th birthday at her home on Sunday.

Centering the tea table was a two-tiered birthday cake baked by Mrs. Norman Storbeck.

Mrs. Peck has been a resident of Phillips County for 51 years. She taught school her first winter in her homestead shack for 10 boys and girls.

To Viet Nam

Pvt. Jerald L. Larsen, son of Marius and Hazel R. Larsen, of Hinsdale and Havre respectfully, left recently from Charleston, S.C., for Viet Nam. He expects to be gone from six to 13 months.

Great Pumpkin is coming

The Malta Dirt Daubers Garden Club would like to announce their First Annual Great Pumpkin Contest to be held in conjunction with the Malta Merchants Halloween Parade.

The contest is open to ages one though 16 and a $5 cash prize will be awarded in the following categories: largest pumpkin, most unusual shape and size, best carved and best decorated.

Local deputy charged with newspaper thefts with slugs

Robert L. Gajewski has been charged with one count of misdemeanor theft and misdemeanor forgery in justice court in Malta.

Gajewski, who is a Phillips County Sheriff's Deputy, pled not guilty to the charges.

The theft charge alleges that Gajewski "obtained or excreted unauthorized control of property owned by another person."

The property in question was $16 worth of Great Falls Tribunes and $17 worth of Billings Gazette newspapers. Gajewski allegedly used circular shaped slugs the size of U.S. quarters in the machines.

Malta School District student numbers up a little

Student enrolment in the Malta School District is actually up slightly, says school Supt. Kris Kuehn.

Enrolment at Malta Elementary School is 253 (34 in kindergarten), at the middle school the total 98 and at the high school the enrolment is 208 (56 in the senior class.)

Fire closes Stockman Bar until 'at least' October

It was business as usual in the Stockman Bar last Thursday...until 12:10 a.m. when Chad Nicholson ran in to tell the revelers the place was on fire and smoke was pouring through the roof.

"There was a short in the line to the sign high on the wall outside," explained owner Ron Stough. "It got into the ceiling and burned the first 16 trusses in the roof over the bar."
