The Mustangs’ first game of the season gave Malta fans plenty to look forward to this season as the Mustangs nearly escaped Worden with a win within the final ten seconds of the game. The team ultimately lost the game 28-27.
Though they hadn’t played a game before Friday night thanks to scheduling and the annual Blue and White Scrimmage being cancelled, Malta went toe-to-toe with the state’s top ranked team.
“That was really weird not having the Blue and White Scrimmage,” Malta Senior Tyson Carney told the PCN. “It was the first time that we haven’t had the Blue and White scrimmage. It wasn’t fun because that’s the start of the season for us and it gets us ready for the year.”
Huntley on the other hand blew out Roundup 51-0 one week prior. That score could be pretty intimidating for most teams in Malta’s position, but the team was unfazed.
“We were confident that we could come out and compete with them, even though they are the first ranked team in the state,” Carney said.
Senior Allen Williamson shared this sentiment.
“I’d say they are the best team in the state besides us,” Williamson said. “No one was expecting us to be within one point. I knew we would do a lot better than Roundup did but I told everybody that I don’t think anyone is going to beat Huntley unless we do.”
Williamson’s confidence was backed up as Malta jumped out to an early lead in the game, thanks to a controlled offense that ran well even on their first drive that ended with a one yard touchdown run by Jase Galt.
