Whitewater News
In talking with the government surveyor who has charge of the surveying crews that are working on the un-surveyed land north of Saco Thursday he said, "I never saw better grain crops than are to be seen right now in Whitewater and Valleytown districts, it can't be beat in the best grain regions in the world." Sounds good, does it not?
Hill climbing contest
John Shady, T.V. Sharp, C.H. McCreddy and the editor of this paper took an early morning ride to the W. Mason home Sunday morning to settle a hill climbing wager between Mr. Mason and Mr. Shady. The hill which the Dodge was to climb and did climb, was just north of the Mason house near Lovejoy. To say that the hill is one of the worst hills for an automobile in the country, would be putting it mildly.
The Dodge driven by Mr. Sharp made the hill twice without stopping. Several in Malta thought it not a very difficult feat when told about it on return of the party and soon another wager was up with Messrs Akin and Goggin as to the climbing ability of their Buick 37. It was to take a standing start and not stop on the hill the same as the Dodge and carry the same load. About noon the Buick made its tryout on the hill and after three attempts the job was given up.

Year's baseball classic due Sunday
A rip-snorting baseball game is promised the fans Sunday afternoon when Glasgow comes here to meet Malta in the "grudge battle" of the year on the south side diamond Sunday afternoon.
Malta demonstrated its ability to come through in the pinches last Sunday afternoon against Havre and is anticipating some semblance of a game from the temperamental Glasgow crew.
Sunday's fracas will be a continuation of the jaw-fest at the Hot Water Well, August 4, when Glasgow picked up its marbles and refused to play after a dispute.

Fire destroyed Saco garage Sunday night
A garage in Saco, formerly the Chevrolet garage, burned to the ground Sunday night. Mayor Knute Jacobson, chief of the Saco Fire Department, said the cause has not been determined.
When the fire department arrived, the building was fully ablaze and firemen concentrated on preventing spread of the fire to neighboring buildings.
Joe Mavencamp, now Chevrolet dealer in Malta, had leased the repair shop in the rear of the building from Don Plouffe two years ago. The building is reported to have been insured, but not Plouffe's tools and vehicle parts, they were all destroyed.

Football field changes; no parking inside
Construction of a new track around the Malta football field will cause some inconvenience to fans attending home games this year.
Principal Kelly Taylor this week asked fans to be patient noting that there will be a "dirt problem" through the fall because the track is not complete.
Kelly also emphasized that fans will no longer be allowed to park their vehicles inside the field around the track. Cement curbing poured for the new expanded track will no longer permit that.
Fans will also be watching night games under new lights which were erected Monday night with the assistance of Montana Power Company and Big Flat Electric and other volunteers.

PhillCo to explore 'free land' to attract new home builders
The public is invited to the monthly PhillCo meeting to learn more about a successful program that is impacting the residential populations of rural communities across the mid-west.
"We'll learn about Ellsworth, Kan., where not only do they actively invite people to move there, they give away free land for home construction and down payment assistance to eligible families relocating into their community," said Anne Boothe, Executive Director of PhillCo.
