100 years ago

August 13, 1915

Wagner shooting affair

E.M. Parmenter and Thos. Byers were arrested at Wagner early Sunday morning by Sheriff Shaw for the alleged shooting up of Phillip Douchette's claim shack. The shooting trouble grows, it is said, out of Byers' attempt to locate on Douchette's claim. The latter alleges that while he was away from his farm one day Byers squatted on the place and when he returned both Byers and Parmenter shot at his using rifles.

Byers is alleged to have appropriated 80 acres belonging to Homesteader J. A. Goss and had plowed up a considerable portion of the latter's flax.

A large number of homesteaders from the Wagner vicinity were Malta visitors Tuesday, many of them being witness in the Douchette-Parmenter trail.

The trial of Tasseff, the Italian section hand from Dodson, was held here Saturday and resulted in the release of the defendant as none of the witnesses could be found and the Justice ordered the case dismissed.

Final arrangements being made for fair

Final arrangements have been made for the 25th Annual Phillips Count Fair which promises to surpass past shows and this weekend all roads will lead to Dodson where the many exhibits plus fine entertainment will occupy the attention of the large crowds of visitors expected to attend the fair which has never had to close its gates since it was established in 1915.

Laughs, laughs, and more laughs as well as spine-chilling scenes of mystery and illusion are in store for the people of Malta when The Great Virgil and his company present a full evening mystery show at the City Hall Auditorium August 22.

The Great Virgil, who has spent a lifetime developing this unusual attraction, is rated as the world's greatest magician.

August 12, 1965

1965 Phillips County Fair and Rodeo termed outstanding success, financial, otherwise

"This year's fair was undoubtedly the best from a financial standpoint of any that we have had," stated Marion Waters, secretary of the Phillips County Fair Board, this week. Gate admissions were up about $500 from last year as were carnival receipts and the fair's share of the beer concession.

About $5,000 in premium money, not counting the rodeo prizes, were given to exhibitors. Top money winning exhibitors were Mrs. John Cibulski, $68.25; Mrs. Bud Bradley, $56.50; Alma McCuin, $39.00; Mrs. Kyle Wiese, $37.00; James Tyler, $36.00, and Pete Hoaglund, $22.00.

75th Annual county fair draws crowds

Ideal weather and good crowds, especially on Saturday, marked the 75th Annual Phillips County Fair at Dodson this past weekend.

Total carnival ticket saless were $27,672 compared to $28,059 last year.

Another feature of the fair is the list of top exhibitors based on premium money awarded. And once again, Vera Black of Dodson was the top adult exhibitor collecting $247 in premium money, according to the fair secretary.

Following her in order were Rhonda Ottinger $194; Lucy Newby $149; Delores Andrews $128; amd Linda Rudolph $118.

CUT: Three generations of LaFonds won blue ribbons at the Phillips County Fair this past week. C.K. LaFond (left) won a blue ribbon in artwork while his dad, Craig, won the blue for woodworking and grandfather, Gaylord, (Right) won a blue ribbon for garden produce.

Swim team strokes first place trophy

The Malta Swim Team came on strong Sunday to win the Class A Swim Meet championship title at Conrad.

Malta went into Sunday action with a slim three point lead over Chinook but ended up winning with 179.5 points to Chinook's 166. Lewistown finished third with 148 points.

Erik Schumacher ended a perfect season with three gold medals in the 200 meter individual medley, the 100 meter backstroke and set a new Conrad Pool record in the 50 meter butterfly.

A healthy Spencer could be big UM force

"Depending on Lance's health, he can be the best football player on our team."

That's how University of Montana head coach Bobby Hauck described former Malta Mustang standout Lance Spencer in the Grizzlies 2005 media book entitled Montana Football: A Decade of Dominance.

Spencer is profiled in the book's Honor Candidates section. The senior, 6-2, 255 pound Malta native will start at defensive end when the Grizzlies open the 2005 season hosting Fort Lewis.

Editor's Note: Spencer has the fourth most career tackles for loss in Griz history with 30.5 and the fourth most career sacks with 23.
