Williamson, Brown impress at this year's Little Mustang Basketball Camp

The 2015 Little Mustangs Basketball Camp hosted June 1-3 featured plenty of growth and enthusiasm amongst the young athletes that ranged from first to sixth grade. The camp was led by Lead Counselors Lori Carney and DoDee Oxarart.

Individual winners during the camp were:

Most Improved - Reese Brown

Free Throw Champs - 4th-5th Grade Kaden Bishop / 6th Rex Williamson

Hot Shots - 4th-5th Jared Eggebrecht / 6th Darrow Messerly

3 on 3 winners: Darrow Messerly, Ryan Doyle and Trevor Kimmel

Mr. Hustle: 4th-5th Jon Siewing / 6th Shawn Gilkerson

"Camp was very good this year," said Lead Counselor Lori Carney. "These kids worked very hard. There was a lot of improvement through the week, even more so than I saw last year. These kids really wanted to be here and play ball so they worked hard every day."

The camp featured many different drills and scrimmages, but each year Carney and her crew like to add new things. Having a son on the Mustangs varsity squad has it's perks.

"Tyson had added some new drills," Lori said. "He showed the kids some different one on one moves and different box out drills that we didn't do last year."

How much did the campers like the new drills? According to counselor Carney, the kids practiced the drills even in their free time.

"I saw a lot of improvement in that," she said.

The camp included sixteen first through third graders and twenty-four fourth through sixth graders were led by the sixth grade class, who had the most students.

"They're a very talented group," Carney said. "They won't be able to attend next year but they did really well."

The part that impressed Carney the most was the fact that many of the students showed up thirty minutes before camp started every day to shoot around and work on their skills.

Carney's son, Tyson, was the only junior counselor to return to help out, but first year counselors Konner Kuehn and Kooper Oxarart have impressed Lori.

"At the last minute I picked up Konner Kuehn and he has done well," Lori said. "Kooper was a camper last year and now he's a helper this year. He's done really well working with these kids."

Tyson now a senior in high school has been a strong asset to the varsity team under Coach David Costin. He has been very proactive with the camp since his mother took over as lead counselor a year ago.
