PCMS drag racing to start Saturday, June 6 after FSB Car Show

The eighth season of Phillips County Motorsports kicks off this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hi-Line Dragstrip on Malta's Southside.

The time trials start at 9 a.m. and end at noon.

Opening day will also feature jet cars from Brad Janishewski, who runs Fire 4 Hire Jet Cars out of Edmonton, Alberta.

The cars features are "Mater" a beloved character from the Cars movie franchise and "Secret Weapon," a jet car that looks a lot like an army tank.

The jet cars will not race side by side until about 8:30 or 9 p.m. so that the wake of their flames came be experienced in full.

The racing event features racers from all over Montana, Canada, North Dakota and Wyoming.

Sunday will be the first points race of the season.

"It's going to be a great show," said John Carnahan of PCMS racing.

The races will feature all classes from Box Super Pro, No Box Pro, Street Eliminator High School, Junior Dragster Advanced and Junior Dragster.

"Junior Dragster is getting our kids involved in racing so they understand how things need to be," said Carnahan. "You do it on the track, not out on the street. The same thing goes for high-schoolers and some adults."

Junior Dragsters can start at the age of seven and are eligible to race in that class until 18 years of age.

"80 percent of our racers by the time they get a driver's license, they are ready to get into a door car or a full sized rail car," Carnahan said.

If a kid or teen stands out in the junior class, they can also qualify for even bigger competitions.

"We've had two junior dragsters from Malta Montana go all the way to Memphis to compete (last season)," said Carnahan noting that his son Chris competed in Virginia in the pro class. "For our little small town, we've got some pretty good racers."

The Box Pro racers are among the fastest on the track due to the fact that they have a computer to help at the starting line.

The sportsman class features stock cars that have no trans brakes. Most, though not all racers in the Sportsman Class are in the first few seasons of their racing careers.

According to Carnahan, once a racer gains more confidence, they may step up to the No Box Pro class.
