Penguins, Panthers compete in last meet before mascot changes
The Whitewater Penguins competed in their last event as the Penguins at the 2015 State C Track meet in Laurel last Friday and Saturday.
The team was led by Junior Tatum Moore, who took fifth place in the 100 meter hurdles after recording a time of 16.64 in the final round and 17.17 in prelims. Moore also placed fifteenth in the long jump.
Senior Kourtney Simonson did well in her races taking seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:29.41, which is her best time of the year.
Being that the meet was the last meet of her decorated career, Simonson shared her thoughts.
"I thought it was really good, I really wanted that podium but seventh was as good as I could do, I guess, so I'm happy with it," Simonson said.
She has been battling a cold for the last month and her at time the State Track Meet was no different.
"It kind of came back, so I had two shots that I got on Thursday, right before we left," Simonson said. "I was hoping that it would help."
Simonson also finished fifteenth in the 400.
The lone boy Penguin, senior Jeret Warren placed eighth in the 800. He also placed fourteenth in the 1600.
Keira Simonson took fourteenth in discus.
Kayleigh Cummingsfinished nineteenth in shot put.
Saco's Bailey Funk took seventh in pole vault clearing 8-00. Funk missed finals in triple jump by three inches. She posted a length of 31-10.50. Funk matched personal bests in both events.
"I wish I could've done better but it's not too bad," Funk said. "It was really, really fun."
