Schmoeckel surprised by pleasant plaque honoring service

Though she has been "retired" for nearly six months, Carolyn Schmoeckel keeps herself busy and continues to garner awards for her mantel.

At a recent Malta City Council meeting – the same meetings that Schmoeckel sat in on for 14 years as Malta's Clerk and Treasurer (MMCT) – it was announced that she had been nominated by her peers at the Montana Municipal Clerk's, Treasurer's and Financial Officer's Association for a lifetime achievement award. Low and behold, she won.

Because Schmoeckel wasn't present at said city council meeting, the news of the award came as a surprise.

"Shyla (Jones, Malta Mayor) accepted it for me and was really surprised," Schmoeckel said. "They don't give these out every year so I think it is great."

Schmoeckel worked for the City of Malta for a total of 26 years and was one of only 33 certified municipal clerks in the state of Montana. In her time since retiring from the City of Malta, Schmoeckel has stayed busy in a variety of capacities with different organizations in Phillips County including the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum, the American Auxiliary, the VFW Club and Auxiliary.

"I haven't had a chance to be bored yet," she joked. "And I am still playing darts of course."

Schmoeckel said the award was presented to Mayor Jones on May 7 and says as far as she can tell she was honored with the lifetime achievement because of serving as MMCT's Secretary for four years, President for four years and she served on the Education Committee for a bunch of years.

"On the Education Committee we set the curriculum up for the week-long school for the clerks, treasurers and finance officers," Schmoeckel said. "I was also on the nominating committee and the audit committee for many years so I was very active within the organization."

Schmoeckel currently serves on the Immediate Past President for the MMCT. The MMCT award is shaped in the outline of Montana and marks the fifth such plaque Schmoeckel has in her collection.

"I'll hang this one with the others," Schmoeckel added.
