One Nation, Under God

Malta Dirt Daubers to host Flower Show June 6 at Business Center

One thing gardeners the world over have in common is the desire to show others the “fruits of their labor”. Sometimes this means actual fruit and sometimes vegetables, but always this means flowers.

Malta Dirt Daubers Garden Club is offering local gardeners a venue to show off their flowers, houseplants and arranging abilities. Now before you say you can’t do arrangements, have you ever taken those few kid-handled dandelions or your prize tulips that were so lovingly picked for you, and put them in a vase? If so, you are officially a flower arranger. And if the arrangement of those few dandelions pleased you and your child, you are a successful flower arranger!

There is really no secret to arranging. Maybe a few basic guidelines like placing the larger flowers on the bottom and the smaller flowers up above. Add a few long spiky things to draw your eye the way you want it to go, whether up to the ceiling or down to the tabletop. Fill in with a little baby’s breath and put them in a pretty vase and voila! You have a flower arrangement!

One common misconception is that you have to grow the flowers you arrange. Not so! You may buy, beg, borrow or steal the flowers used in your arrangements. However you do have to grow the individual flowers you enter, and of course the houseplants that you enter must be in your care. There are so many beautiful plants in homes in the area. Won’t you please share them with us at the show?

On Saturday, June 6th the Dirt Daubers are hosting a flower show in the Malta Business Center (the former Ben Franklin). The theme of the show is “Celebrating Phillips County’s Centennial – The People and the Places”. There will be a room devoted to cut flowers grown in your gardens and the houseplants you have so lovingly cared for, a room for youth arrangements and educational displays, and a room for flower arrangements for all ages and all levels of expertise. Included are a few “novice” arrangements for people who are new to arranging. Of course there will be refreshments and door prizes to sign up for. Admission is free and we offer chairs to rest the tired feet of those who are taking in the car show.

Entries may be made Friday, June 5th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 6th from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. There is also a back entrance to make delivering your entries easier. We will be holding a free arranging workshop Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the Malta Business Center. There will be several experienced flower arrangers on hand to guide you in putting together your arrangement. Entry forms are available at the business center. Entry tags will be available when you enter your items, or call a garden club member.

So try something new and different this year – enter a flower show! It is always rewarding and you will have a new skill to show off! Call Jane at 654-1866 or Kathy at 654-7677 for more information.
