Malta takes home meet (Part 2)

Boys let javelins fly

The Malta Mustangs weren't too shabby in their home meet, taking first place for the first time this season.

The team was led by Devon Raybon, Jace Bishop and the long relay team, each of which placed first in events.

Malta dominated the javelin throw taking four of six top placings.

Bishop took first in the event after a throw of 153 feet.

Tyson Carney wasn't far behind, placing second with a throw of 148-10. Keenan Schipman placed fifth with a throw of 143-05 and Jase Galt was sixth with a throw of 142-07.

Ostin Welch, Carney, Galt and Allen Williamson took first place as the team's long relay squad. They won the event after crossing the line at 3 minutes and 50.25 seconds.

The quad also ran the team's short relay and took second with a time of 48.91.

Welch saw his first action at the individual 100 and did not disappoint, taking third in the event with a new personal best of 12.64. He had a time of 26.44 in the 200.

Williamson posted a time of 25.36 in the 200, which gave him a fourth place finish in the event.

Williamson also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19-06.

Raybon won the high jump after clearing 5-10.

"I am just stoked out of my mind right now," Raybon said. "It's pretty crazy."

Though Raybon is skilled in running and jumping events, it was his knowledge of Mustang field that helped him confidently jump well at the meet.

"We have a small high jump surface," Raybon said. "So we have to run from grass to concrete covered in all-weather."

He went on to say that when you go from surface to surface, you have to maintain your stride, whereas many jumpers would slow down.

"A lot of guys got out early because they were trying to stutter step over it, because they aren't used to it," Raybon said.

Raybon was a good sport, admitting that he told a few of the jumpers the secret.

He nearly cleared 6 feet at the meet, but failed to pass over because he was worn out.

Though his legs were tired after trying 6-00, he admitted he loves starting at the lowest point and will likely do so at his next meet.

Quintan Boos took second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.94. Tel Jensen fared well in the event taking fourth with a time of 20 seconds.

Galt took third in the triple jump with a distance of 40-02. He also tied Luke Karnauskas for fifth place in the long jump after a leap of 17-07.50.
