The Malta M-ettes had a great week in Havre, taking first place in the Cal Wearley Memorial last Wednesday, April 8, with a total of 99.5 and third at the Havre Lions Meet last Saturday, with a total of 74.
Darby Schye (shot put), Sophia Stiles (long and triple jump) and Jada Nicholson (high jump) all qualified for state thanks to the new state qualifying standards that can be found at MHSA.org.
The team was led by Stiles who placed first in every individual event she participated in last week.
The week started off well when Stiles had lengths of 15-10.5 and 33-8.75 in the long jump and triple jump, but things only got better for Stiles as she improved on those length at the Havre Lions Meet. She recorded a new personal best of 17-4 in long jump. She posted a length of 36-0.25 in the triple jump. Her current best is 36-09.25.
"If I could get 37 that would be really cool, but I mainly just want to beat my PR (personal record)," Stiles told the PCN.
She admitted before her jumps at the Cal Wearley Meet that she was nervous about getting her boards right.
"I'm going to get on the board and not behind it," Stiles said. "Lots of times my boards aren't the greatest."
Stiles recorded a time of 15.95 in the 100 meter hurdles at the Havre Lions Meet and 17.52 at the Cal Wearley.
"It feels good, my time wasn't the greatest, but it felt good to get the win," Stiles said about her 100 meter hurdles win.
She had a goal to pass her personal best of 15.3, which she set last season.
Jada Nicholson took first place in high jump at the Havre Lions Meet after clearing 5-02. Jada previously took second at the Cal Wearley to Kim Parsell of Shelby, though both athletes cleared 5 feet. Parsell took second to Jada at the Lions Meet, after failing to clear 5-00.

Marley Manoukian took second in pole vault after clearing 7-06 at the Cal Wearley Meet. Her finish was a tie with Cut Bank's Abbi Fitzpatrick.
Manoukian also took fifth in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 18.69. She took fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 52.59.
Manoukian took sixth in the 100 meter hurdles at the Cal Wearley Meet, with a time of 18.3.
After missing the 2014 track season due to injury, Kaitlyn Smith is back and in her second Meet of the year, the Havre Lions Meet, Smith took first place in the javelin throw, with a toss of 109-00.
"It's good to be back," Smith said. "I enjoy it."
Smith had a throw of 112-07 at the Cal Wearley Meet, her first Meet since the injury, and though the distance of the throw was greater, she placed second to Simms' Hollee Meek.
"I don't think it went too bad for the first Meet," Smith said. "Hopefully it progresses."
Smith said she would ultimately like to see her javelin throw surpass 120, as her personal best was a 122 her freshman year.
"I really want to beat that school record, but I don't know if I can get it."
Smith also took fifth in shot put at the Havre Lions Meet with a throw of 29-03.
"I don't think it was too bad for the first time," Smith said with a smile. "I've only practiced it once."
Her throw at the Cal Wearley Meet was 29-03 and good enough for fifth.
Smith took fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.76 at the Havre Lions Meet.
Hailey Nicholson took third in the high jump at the Cal Wearley Meet after clearing 4-08 took fourth in the same event after clearing 4-6 at the Lions Meet.
Hailey also threw in discus and javelin, despite only practicing discus once. The day before the Cal Wearley Meet.
The M-ettes short relay team consisting of Manoukian as the first leg, Schye as the second leg, Smith and the third leg and Stiles as the anchor leg took first at the Cal Wearley Meet, with a time of 54.58.
The long relay team consisting of Mary Grace Kalal, Jada Nicholson, Hailey Nicholson and Correena Torrez took third at the Meet, with a time of 4:46.82.
The short relay team had a time of 57.35 at the Havre Lions Meet and took second.
Shay Garfield placed fourth in shot put at the Cal Wearley with a throw of 30-03.25. She also tied for sixth in discus with a throw of 86-2.
Mary Grace Kalal took fifth in Discus with a throw of 88-4 at the Cal Wearley. Kalal also took fifth in the javelin, with a throw of 93-7.
Freshman Ella Schye participated in her first high school Meet of the season at the Cal Wearley.
There she posted a 24-09 in shot put, though she knows she can do better.
"I felt like I could've done better because the best I got last year was around 28," Schye said.
Ella admits that her older sister Darby is quite handy.
"She's helped me a lot when Mr. King is out coaching javelin," Schye said.
Ella says in order to improve she needs to get more weight on her right foot.
