One Nation, Under God
Last week I waxed poetic (AKA blabbered like a dunce) about how we would be black and white with last week’s paper but in the coming future the pages of the Phillips County News would be in color, at least for a spell.
Well, the future is now. Unfortunately, Stan, our printing ace in Glasgow, traveled to Billings on Monday morning to get prepped for surgery. He said he is feeling fine, but that spot on his oesophagus turned out to be a cancerous tumor. He wasn’t sure if the doctors in Billings were going to operate, start chemotherapy or exactly what was going to happen. Through it all, Stan is in good spirits and each of the four member staff here at the PCN has him in our hearts and our prayers.
So, as you know by now, the PCN was indeed in color last week. As far as I know, the paper will continue to be in color for the foreseeable future. That being said, I don’t want you, dear readers, to get too used to the color pages as I don’t really have any say as to when or if we will revert back to the bad old days, dark and dreary, black and white pages.
One thing to keep in the back of your mind is that sometime soon, the publication day could change from Wednesday mornings to just about any other day of the week. As I scour the pages of papers from 100, 75, 50, 75 and 10 years ago, the PCN has printed on each day of the work week over the years. I know it would take a lot longer for you to get used to a change in the day the paper comes out versus the change to color, but used to it you would get.
With the change from B&W to color has also meant some changes to how the pages will be laid out while we are in CMYK mode (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, the four-color printing process.) For instance, the Memories page has been moved from the back of the A Section to the inside so that its former home can accommodate more color pictures. That is also the case with the Classified page.
As I listen to folks walk in and out of my shop this morning, I have heard how much people like the color pages -- no less than 20 people have mentioned it in the first two hours we have been open this a.m.
We are excited about the change too. As exciting as Walt Disney’s early TV shows were, they were even more impressive when they switched over to the Wonderful World of Color on Sunday evenings.
Thanks for reading and aloha.
