100 years ago

April 15, 1915

Headline: Bad auto accident

Monday morning about three miles south of town, Al Shaw had the misfortune to turn his auto over with five occupants. They were coming in from the Larb Hills with Alex Doney, who is charged with horse stealing, when the accident occurred. John Survant, on of the passengers in the rear seat, was hurt quite badly, suffering a broken collar bone and some internal injuries and has since been confined to his room.

Marvin Jones, another occupant of the rear seat, was caught under the car and was badly shaken up, but no bones broken. Sheriff Shaw is wearing a black eye as the result of the mix-up and the prisoner, Doney, was shaken some.

April 18, 1940

Headline: Four Berdans are Honor Students at High School

A scholastic record for Malta High School has been achieved by the family of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Berdan. Four members of the family are in high school. One being a sophomore, and three being seniors, and all are on the honor roll for the fifth, six week period. Marian Berdan, a sophomore, and Albert Lee, Francis and Grace are seniors. All have been on pervious honor rolls but they have never all been on the roll at the same time.

April 15, 1965

Headline: Foot and a half of snow at Landusky Sunday

We are hoping this is the last of the snowflakes for a while. It looks like we are going to have lots of grass but we are wondering if there will be any stock let to eat it. Sunday morning found our community with 18 or 20 inches of snow on the level but the wind piled it up in five-foot drifts at some of the ranches. Reece Heppner chained up his Scout to go up to the mine Sunday, but only made it part way as the Scout couldn't fight the deep snow.

Headline: Mayor's Committee reports on flood preparations

The Mayors Emergency Committee, made up of Gaylord LaFond, Pete Dobson and Lou Perry, reported on work being done by city crews in preparation for a Milk River flood...seven trucks have been hauling dirt and have completed a dike from behind the Riverside Equipment building to the railway grade at the west end of South First Street.

Headline: Chamber to support one day NRA rodeo at fair

Chamber of Commerce members voted Monday to sponsor a one-day NRA rodeo during the Phillips County Fair.

The possibility of holding an amateur rodeo on the second day was discussed.

The Phillips County Fair Board has pledged $4,500 to the chamber plus 25-percent of the gate if it would produce a two-day NRA rodeo. Cost of the rodeo is $4,200 for two days.

Saco news:

Oris Dahlen won top honors for her work at the Montana Seed Show Art Show held recently in Harlem. This is the first time she has brought her work to the show. Oris is a self-taught artist who prefers to paint the west as it is today. She and her husband, Roger, live on a ranch north of Saco.

Headline: Prayer service slated for tonight

The Military Family Readiness Group is hosting a "Sign the Banner" prayer service to pray for our soldiers, for peace and for human dignity.

"We welcome everyone to come and help us all realize, feel and understand the awesome power of prayer," said group spokesperson Diane Salsbery. "We will be signing a banner of support to hang in a prominent area of our town."
