Ruth Flansaas honored as "Faithful Quilter"

On Wednesday, April 8, at the Annual Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (WELCA ) no host luncheon, Ruth Flansaas was honored as a "Faithful Quilter."

Ruth and John moved from their Loring farm into Malta and she started the Hands All Around quilting club in their basement. Her first quilt was made with the help of Grace Simser. It took them two days to cut out a Double Wedding Ring scrap quilt to make a 50th wedding anniversary gift for her parents, Marion & Iva Runnion. Sheila Simanton started the idea of making quilts for the graduating seniors attending Malta Lutheran Church with the WELCA ladies and Ruth has been making the quilt tops since.

The past couple of years she's made the tops at home and they have been backed and tied at the church. Many past graduating members and non-members have received one of these wonderful creations. Ruth wanted everyone recognized who participated in the making of the quilts along with all the quilts that are also made for Lutheran World Relief and shipped worldwide. The plaque that now bears Ruth's name along with Evelyn Hendrickson (who made afghans & potholders) hangs in the entry to Wick's Hall at the Malta Lutheran Church. It's titled Malta Lutheran Ladies, WELCA - Helping Hands and states "In Appreciation of those who have served."
