Mustangs take sixth at Glasgow Invitational

The Malta Mustangs track and field squad made their presence felt at the Glasgow Invitational last Saturday, March 28, finishing sixth at the meet with a total of 31 points.

Garfield County’s Mustangs were a real surprise, taking first at the meet with 98 points. Glasgow was second with 92 points and Wolf Point was third with 61.

Malta’s Jace Bishop finished second in the javelin throw, with a length of 144-9, which is only ten feet from his personal best(154-0), which he recorded at the Northern B Divisional in Great Falls last year.

Bishop also placed eleventh in the high jump, after clearing 5-00.

Bishop was also the first leg in the Mustang’s long relay (4x400 meter) team, that placed fourth with a time of 4:25.29.

The long relay team consisted of Bishop, Ostin Welch, Jase Galt and Allen Williamson as the last leg.

Williamson was also the second leg in the boy’s short relay that placed third at the meet with a time of 48.34.

The short relay team consisted of Devon Raybon, Williamson, Quintan Boos and Jase Galt.

“I think we just have to practice a little more,” Galt said. “We hardly practiced (relays) at all this week in practice. We just winged it a little bit but I think we’ll get a lot better.”

Though Williamson hasn’t been at a track meet since eighth grade, he was impressive in both relays and in jumping events.

Williamson started the day placing fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 19-06, which marks a great start for Williamson, who hasn’t had much if any practice in the event.

Williamson walked into the high jump, without any practice, and scissor kicked over opening heights of 5-0 and 5-2, but eventually switched to a more commonly used “Fosbery Flop” for higher heights.

Williamson would eventually clear 5-8 and take fourth in the event.

Galt, a junior, is in his first season of track and field after competing in golf last year.

“It’s going alright for a first meet,” Galt said. “I think I’ll improve a lot by the second meet, I think. There’s a lot of room to improve.”

Galt, who has been Malta’s starting quarterback for the last two years, proved he can also throw a javelin, placing fourth in the javelin throw with a throw of 128-4.

Fellow junior Devon Raybon was in his first track meet of his high school career as well.

Raybon surprised himself placing sixth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.71.

“It could be going a lot worse,” Raybon said. “I got sixth in hurdles, so I’m pretty happy about that. It’s the first time I’ve ever run hurdles in my life.”

His lone mistake came at the last hurdles as he caught one coming down.

“They get taller as you go, I swear,” Raybon said.

Raybon would later try the high jump and clear 5-2, which was good enough for eighth place.

Tel Jensen is in his first year of track, being a freshmen.

“It’s been pretty tough because I haven’t practiced all of my events,” Jensen said. “But I’m doing pretty good.”

Jensen placed ninth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 56.40.

“I was really out of shape,” Jensen admitted. “I guess I just gotta run more laps.”

Jensen also cleared 4-10 in the high jump.

Sophomore Jalen Lamb recorded throw of 100-8 in the javelin throw and 32-5 in shot put.

Lamb also recorded a leap of 15-08 in the long jump.

Boos, a senior, new to track as well, ran a 13.20 in the 100 meter dash.

Freshman Jacob Kunze recorded a throw of 27-7 in shot put and 58-8 in discus.

Freshman Adam Mummey recorded a time of 15.36 in the 100 meter dash.
