One Nation, Under God
The Dodson Lady Coyotes have now made the Eastern C Divisional Tournament for the second straight season in a row after missing out for the last ten years.
The team did so by outlasting Lustre Christian 45-41 in the fourth place elimination game last Saturday.
The team also won their first elimination game against the Opheim Lady Vikings last Friday. The score was 58-26.
The team lost their opening game last Thursday 63-51 to the Frazer Bearcubs.
In their fourth place game against the Lustre Christian Lady Lions, the Lady Coyotes were led by Janessa Henry, who scored 19 points.
Shawnee KillEagle had 11 points. Jacina Doney had eight points and Donna Dale had seven.
“Shawnee stepped up for us and did a lot of good things offensively during the tournament,” Dodson Coach Brandy Hunter said. “For her it was the best week of basketball that she had this season.”
In their first win of the tournament against the Opheim Vikings, the Lady Coyotes flexed their muscle, overpowering the Vikings 58-26.
Janessa Henry had a stellar 36 points in the win. Doney had 14 points. Dale, Shania KillEagle, Shawnee KillEagle and Wozek Chandler had two points a piece.
“We reduced our turnovers,” Coach Hunter said. “We went in knowing we had to be fundamentally sound. We took care of the ball, reduced our fouls. The girls knew we needed to win to stay in the tournament and they did everything right.”
In their loss to the Frazer Bearcubs, Henry had 19 points. Jacina Doney had 15 points. Dale had six points. Shawnee KillEagle had five points. Chandler had four points and Shania Killeagle had two points.
Though the team turned over the ball 56 times, they were able to keep the game to a twelve point loss.
“You’re never going to win a game with 56 turnovers,” Coach Hunter said.
In order for Dodson to make it to state they will have to finish first or second in the tournament.
The Lady Coyotes till take on the Circle Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
The winner will take on the winner of the Mon-Dak and Scobey game in the Semi-final round of the tournament.
Needless to say Dodson cannot afford to have nearly as many turnovers as they have had in past games. The team has proven if they can protect the ball, they have a good chance of winning.
