One Nation, Under God
The 23rd Annual Phillips County Healthcare Foundation Dinner and Auction held on Friday, January 30 raised a total of $25,392 after a total expense of $11,288.92.
The item that brought in the highest bid was item number 32, a half a beef, donated by Ken Wasson with processing donated by Saco Pay-N-Save. The beef went to The First State Bank of Malta for $2400.
The most peculiar and perhaps more entertaining part of the raffle was when a used North Face vest was presented as a surprise item in the auction.
The item was first bought for $250 by Spencer Electric, who then donated the item back to the fund-raiser for another round of auctioning. The item would then raise another $250 as Sather Trucking won the vest only to give it back again.
Then the item was bought by The American Prairie Reserve for $275, then David Boothe for $200, then Farmers and Ranchers for another $200. Dean Kienenberger would buy the item for $225, only to give the item back to it’s original owner, Phillips County Insurance’s Jake Stuart, who had no clue his vest would be used as a prank that netted the fund-raiser $1400.
Stuart loaned the vest to a friend who claimed he needed the vest to go out into the cold to get something from his car.
“Cody Oxarart from Independence Bank needed to run to his vehicle and said he might get cold and would like a vest,” Stuart told the PCN.
It was a ruse. Oxarart was given instruction to get the vest by none other than Valley Drugs’ Greg Ziegler, who schemed with Luke Spencer of Spencer Electric to separate Stuart from his beloved vest.
“The next time I saw the vest it was being bid,” Stuart said. “I didn’t know anything about it and it was news to me. I’m glad it went so well.”
At first Stuart was nervous he would lose his $80 vest, that he bought in Denver a few years ago.
“I was a little bit nervous because I like to wear it especially in the fall and the spring,” Stuart said. “I’d like to thank Dean Kienberger for donating it and buying it back.”
Stuart also said he was thankful that the vest was used for something other than to moderate his body temperature.
With some help from Stuart’s vest, the fund-raiser did well this year according to Michelle Sather, the Director of the Healthcare Foundation.
“I think it went very well, it was a different a different month this year, so I was worried about the turnout, but we have seen so much support from all of the community and we really appreciate it,” Sather said.
There weren’t many surprises other than Stuart’s $1400 vest.
“Other than that everything went extremely smooth, we are thankful for all of the donations and support we get from the community. Everything just came together.”
Cliff Rustad, the event’s auctioneer also believed the auction went well.
“I thought they did real well,” Cliff Rustad said after the auction. “I can’t complain one bit. They got right on it. It all goes to a good cause and you know how that is, they all try to help out in these situations and we appreciate that.”
The proceeds this year will go toward the Hi-Line Retirement Center.
The raffle held at the conclusion of the auction featured three high dollar items.
Malta’s John Dovery won the grand-prize which was a four-wheeler.
“I’ve wanted another four-wheeler,” Dovery said.
Barb Sather won a Winchester rifle with a scope, which is the second gun she has ever won, though she has never fired a gun.
“It’ll probably be Chris’ (her son) gun or his dad’s,” Barb said.
She said she bought five tickets because she wanted the four-wheeler too.
When asked if she would learn to shoot after winning a couple of guns, Barb just said, “Probably.”
Mary Moore won the third prize, which was a Grizzly Cooler.
