One Nation, Under God
The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers established their dominance over the Scobey Lady Spartans, sweeping the team in the regular season after their 57-49 win last Saturday. The Lady Panthers also smashed the Nashua Lady Porcupines 69-4 in Nashua.
In their win against Scobey, junior Tatum Moore scored 25 points.
Senior Larimie Scheffelmear, who was getting beat up pretty bad in the paint scored 14 points.
Keira Simonson scored nine points including a huge three point field goal, which helped Saco-Whitewater seal the game in the fourth.
Kourtney Simonson scored seven points in the game. Kayleigh Cummings scored two points.
It was a close game and wasn't really decided until the closing minutes.
"It didn't feel like it was that close of a game because we kept our composure so well," Moore said.
Scobey proved to be tough in the paint, slowing Saco-Whitewater down tremendously throughout the game.
"I just knew that I couldn't let them score and get rebounds. I needed to get them," Larimie Scheffelmear said.
Saco-Whitewater typically presses teams into oblivion but Scobey's press break was good, limiting turnovers.
Scobey played surprising well, though their point guard BoDayle Battleson fell into early foul trouble in the second quarter.
The game would typically be out of reach for most Saco-Whitewater opponents, but most shots that typically fall didn't for Saco-Whitewater.
The score at the beginning of the third quarter was 37-35 in favor of Saco-Whitewater.
Saco-Whitewater would out-score Scobey 20-14 in the fourth including two huge treys, one from Keira Simonson and another from Tatum Moore.
"I just knew that if I kept shooting, they would start falling at some time," Moore said. "I also knew when I was missing shots, Larimie would be down there to grab the rebounds like she always is."
Moore admitted that having such a strong post player helps keep her mind in the right place.
One place she may lose a little bit of her mind is when she gets excited.
Early in the game an offensive foul was called against Scobey, in favor of Moore, who then broke out into a dance on the court.
"I just got super excited. When I get really excited, I show it and it fires up the crowd and it fires up the rest of our team," Moore said.
There were no seniors from Saco Schools, but being the school's Senior Night, Moore and Scheffelmear were happy to bring home a win.
"It felt pretty good, it was pretty exciting because it was more of a closer game, which made it more exciting," Scheffelmear said.
The Lady Panthers demolished the Nashua Porcupines, defeating them 69-4 last Friday.
By the end of the first quarter the Lady Panthers were up 32-2.
The team wouldn't surrender another bucket until the third quarter and not another point after.
Moore led the Lady Panthers with 24 points, 16 of which came in the first quarter and the other eight points coming in the second quarter.
Keira Simonson had 12 points in the win. Scheffelmear had 10 points. Kourtney Simonson had eight points. Jada Sudbrack had six points. Kayleigh Cummings had four points. Both Kaycee Howard and Bailey Funk had two points and Mickayla Johnson had one point.
The Lady Panthers are scheduled to play the Lustre Christian Lions on Friday at 6 p.m.
The team has a Valentine's Day surprise game, where they will square off against the Roy-Winifred Lady Outlaws.
Though the Outlaws have joined the Northern C division just this last season, the team has thrived and are currently the top ranked team in Class C.
"We need to play our game of basketball," Moore said. "If we play our game of basketball, they don't stand a chance."
This game will be the tougher regular season game the Lady Panthers have had in years.
Tip-off is set for Saturday Night at 7:30 p.m.
